STFU, GreenWay. Clare is not the Gateway to anything other than Farwell.
So true.  Only way us old south-eastern Michigan folks even know Clare exists is because it took forever to get I-75 built from Standish to Roscommon.

To be fair, Clare had a pretty cool Mobil gas station just off 10/127.  Vending machines delivering sandwiches and one of the first microwave ovens I ever saw. It was ahead of its time.

Tri-Town Fire Department to open doors to community

MIO –– The Tri-Town Fire Department will host its third open house Saturday, Sept. 23, to get local children and families more familiar with the department as a whole.

Fire Chief Dave Stenzel said the open house usually gets good responses from attendees and will include many activities for the whole family to participate in.

“It’s going to include letting the kids go through the fire trucks, there will be some games, hot dogs and there might be a special visitor coming,” he said. “And I’m going to have a smoke house for the kids to go through.”

The open house will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stenzel said some of the guys from his fire department will be there as well.

So goose, I hit up the Michigan historical center this morning and get a private tour behind the scenes of civil and WWI flags. How they're preserving them where they're from, who donated to keep them staluzed etc. but here's the deal. They're currently putting an exhibit together about "the river that changed the world" Yep, you guessed it.

Opening next month. The workers let me sneak a few pictures.

Michigan lost 80% of their brigade at Gettysburg that day. 9 men on that day died carrying this flag. Fucking really emotional. They get you then they ask for money.

Yep, they were a reinforcement regiment added to the original Iron Brigade. My Dad was a genealogist back in the 60s and 70s before it was a "thing". As a child/youth I spent many days of our family vacations in cemeteries and Civil War battlefields. I had kin in the 7th MI, the 24th MI and the 1st MI cavalry so Dad was all over them.

A good article on that day @ Gettysburg: “No Man Can Take Those Colors and Live” The Epic Battle Between the 24th Michigan and 26th North Carolina at Gettysburg

I've got pictures at various ages of all my kids at that statue and have walked many sections of that battlefield including Pickett's charge. The one lifelong hobby I've kept up is battlefield visits, I've been to nearly every major engagement of the Civil and Revolutionary Wars. Getting out and walking where they fought will quickly convince you that those guys were made of a steel that doesn't exist anymore.

You would have enjoyed this tour of flags. I got to be an archivist today, with white gloves on, pulling cool flags out. 1st calvary's too. It was in maticulous shape. Most Calvary colors are because of being carried by horses vs guys getting shot.

Never thought of that but it does make sense. That would have been an interesting day. Part of the reason I get upset over the statue issue is how much the tours and learning about wars has meant in my life and I hate to see that erased for the next generation.

I'd love to get both sides of the confederate flag issue to go down and see the collection. One side treats it as racist one side uses it to intimidate. I'd get 95% of both sides don't know what it means to have captured or carried the colors. Most northern states have given the capture colors back to the southern states. Didn't realize Custers brother received two medals of honor for capturing brigades colors. Crazy.

Black bears to be celebrated at annual festival

area - Mio and area Doings - Page 18 1506535273_a8f2

CURRAN –– The 13th annual Curran Black Bear Festival will return Saturday, Sept. 30, with a classic car show, parade, arts and crafts show, a cake walk and many other activities for the whole family.

Visitors come from all over to see the Black Bear Capital of Michigan during the festival, which is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. and will run until 4 p.m.

Door prizes, raffles and other prizes will be available, according to festival Chairman Maxine Small, who has coordinated the event for several years.

“We have the car show and we’re going to have Twister Joe and three girls will do a dance,” she said. “We’re going to have the regular raffles, which are for a black bear quilt, a bear carving and a garden bench. We’re going to have a car show, the parade at 1 p.m., a search and rescue canine unit, door prizes, a cake walk and a bake sale.”

Small said while she did not have an estimate of how many attend each year, the weather tends to affect the crowds. She believes this year there will be a larger crowd.

MIO –– Blue Collar Clothing Company opened its doors Friday, Sept. 29, with a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a day of festivities for family, friends and guests. The owners offered food, drinks, music and more as they invited everyone to come celebrate with them during their first official day in business. Blue Collar Clothing Company is located at 200 Morenci Ave. in Mio.

Stuff the Blue Goose to help those in need

MIO –– A donation event will take place Friday, Oct. 6, in which anyone can purchase or bring nonperishable items, toiletries and winter hats and gloves to fill Michigan State Police vehicles and help the less fortunate.Community Service Trooper Ashley Simpson has been coordinating the event, which is being hosted for the first time in Oscoda County.

“It’s an annual event here in Alpena,” she said. “It’s too hard to shuttle what we collect here in Alpena down to the other counties, so that’s why I’m trying to host it in the other counties. We do it at Christmastime in Alpena and we collect nonperishable items and toys, so I’m trying to hit the canned good sales and gear up toward Thanksgiving time and help people get food for Thanksgiving.”

The event will take place from 2-6 p.m. at Family Fare in Mio, but donors can bring items before that date as well.

Just discovered today that the Lost Creek Sky Ranch closed.

I've been patronizing the place since the mid70s - our family cabin was only a mile or so away.   Unfortunately probably the most famous for being the site of the initial fight that led to the deer hunter murders as told in "Darker than Night".

IT was a great place and the scene of the funniest barfight I've ever seen.

RIP old friend - until someone reopens you.   It's in pretty good shape with a bar/restaurant/motel/air strip and ball fields.   Someone will revive it.

maybe it's just me, but the thought of running for "His Love" sounds like a bunch of boys being chased by priests.

Bob my friend? I should caution you that reading this might upset your applecart.

His Love is a community funded outreach center centered on pregnant women. To help them learn to care for themselves, their future child, etc. They do this all for free to the Moms even to the point of giving them maternity and baby clothing, actually paying them to take classes and on and on. It's one of those things that people that are pro life are always told we should do....and it's being done here and has been. You know, one of those putting your $$ where your mouth is things. Oh yeah....and it's being done up here in the poor uneducated hicksville county that people like to talk about in a negative way. Must be that some of the deplorables actually take this love thy neighbor thing seriously.

I'm sorry to disappoint you by letting you know it doesn't involve little boys and priests, you can keep those thoughts in your imagination for tonight.
