why even go to a movie theater?
Thought about this over the weekend. I've gone to so few movies over the last few years, and I have good reasons for it:
- With big flat screen TVs and surround sound, and DVD/Bluray the quality at home is as good as the theater now.
- The price of snacks is much less at home than the theater.
- The price of the movie is actually cheaper on DVD or Bluray (to buy and own!) than admission for a family of four.
- If you have to go to the bathroom you can pause the movie.
- If someone else has to go to the bathroom you can pause the movie and not miss any as they walk in front of you.
- No young kids making a racket, kicking the back of your seat. No morons texting or talking on their phone, and leaving the ringer on.
- Don't have to worry about the germs and disease soaked into the theater seats, or bed bugs tagging along with you after the flick.

Sometimes its fun to just go out and see a movie on the big screen. That being said, the last movie I went to was Hunger Games 2.

I can't stand going to the theater. I have trouble sitting still that long; and it's crazy expensive.
The only appeal is getting hammered and yelling at shitty movies in an empty theatre.

There's something about going to the theater once or twice a year. And movie theater popcorn.
There's hardly ever more than 2 or 3 Hollywood movies a year worth seeing anyway. So unless you're a hardcore movie buff that likes to see everything, it shouldn't break the bank.

I imagine a theater's appeal goes downhill when you have to think about things like your kid having to pee. Escapism is the entire point of a lot of movies.

Re: why even go to a movie theater?
I only see 4-5 movies a year and it's great to see something on the big screen.
That being said. People talking, texting and coming in late to the movie drives me nuts. I find it better to go at times when the movie will be least busy and it is much better. No I'm not a miserable old man but when you're showing up 15 minutes late to a movie and take forever to sit down it distracts everyone. Going when less people are in the theatre is just better because people are rude and don't care about your experience. I would be a fan of closing the doors and not letting people in once previews are over.

Even movie theater popcorn can be made at home:

Re: why even go to a movie theater?
I'll go see a few loud, flashy movies every year. Pacific Rim, Godzilla, Gravity, Avatar... you get the idea. The type of movie where you don't really care if people are making noise and the crowd atmosphere actually contributes to the experience. It's basically a theme park ride.
That said, I see no reason to ever see a drama or comedy in the theater. For reasons mentioned above about the quality of home theaters, the popcorn-rustling shitheads, and because you're going to spend half the time listening to explosions from whatever loud-ass movie is playing on the next screen over.

I have been to the theater once in the last 4 years, and the movie was horrible. Much rather watch at home.

Re: why even go to a movie theater?
I will play devils advocate here...
The average silver screen is 22 feet tall by 52 feet wide. Doubt any of us have a screen that big at home. And yes, in this case size does matter.
Better sound equipment and played at higher volumes than you will listen to at your home.
People - yes, there's a lot of annoying people at movies that can ruin the experience. Seeing a good comedy though in a crowded theater can add to the experience.
Previews - I love em. Watching on Youtube or on a website is no the same.
Last, there's just something magical about it. I can remember seeing Pulp Fiction for the first time at the theater, or Fight Club or so many incredible films at the theater and just being in awe of the experience. I've never had anything close to those moments while watching on my home theater.

Re: why even go to a movie theater?
1. There are a few movies every year that your kids, co-workers, friends (you know, people who go to the movies) want to talk about, and instead of saying, get back to me in 4 months after it comes out DVD, you would like to join in the conversation.
2. Maybe you don't want to install a dozen speakers and spend a $1,000 to try and replicate the sound system in the theater.
3. It means you are not sitting on the same couch or chair you sit in the other 300 nights a year.

I don't know man I just like to get out of my house once in a while. It's like saying why go to a game when you can just watch it on TV. It's just the experience of it.
That and the kids can't wait until something comes out on DVD, they need the instant gratification.

I'm with you on this one. Some action movies are only worth seeing on the big screen.

I also like the previews and I would never bother with trying to replicate them on You Tube at home. And comedies are a lot better with a group, preferably a big group. When I saw There's Something About Mary at the theater, the entire place was going crazy. There's no way to get that energy at home.

Every now and then I like to make a night out of seeing a movie and grabbing dinner afterward. Saw the hobbit and got a buffalo chicken sandwich this past December. Awesome day.

That's different. I got 4 Tigers tickets to a June game for $28. That's like two people and a soda at AMC.

Re: why even go to a movie theater?
Walked out of a showing of "Godzilla" recently.
I thought the movie up to that point was fine, but the theater - for a PG13 movie, mind you - was filled with toddlers and infants. Just endless crying and the smell of baby poop everywhere.
