The pitching is going to doom them ultimately. They need too many things to go exactly right to really contend. They don't need ALL of them to go exactly right, just too many of them to realistically expect that they will.

To expand on that thought, just from a Pitching perspective, here are some of the things I think they would really need to happen and my confidence in them:

SP:
JV to continue to be one of the best SP in the AL - confidence meter - 90%
Fulmer to continue his ascension - confidence meter - 75% (would not be surprised if he had a soph slump and leveled off a bit this year)
Boyd to take a big leap - 60%. I like Boyd. He can be the crafty lefty and I like his makeup.
Norris to take the next step to be a legit #2/#3 SP - 40%. Just don't see the consistency happening this year.
JZ to prove last year was a fluke - 5%. Last year was not a fluke imo. I thought JZ was bad for a few years before Detroit signed him

Bullpen:
K Rod to shake the early jitters and return to last year's form - 10%
Justin/Alex Wilson to keep up their early pace - 75%. These guys are pretty good.
Rondon to become a late inning contributor - 5%
Jiminez to become a late inning contributor THIS year - 20%
Greene to settle in - Greene has GREAT stuff. I will maintain that. But 10%. He hasn't figured out how to use his arsenal yet and no reason to think it will happen this year
Sanchez to return to a semblance of his former self - 1%

I would say the Tigers would need 3 of those things to happen from their SP staff and 3 of them to happen from their BP in order to compete for the Central and be a legit WC team that actually might have a chance to win something in October.

Don't see it.

A couple of points of optimism -

Sanchez I actually think he can become somewhat reliable at long relief. I'm keeping an eye on him and anxious to see him pitch again. I think if he can come out and provide a reliable inning or two I think it changes the BP dynamic.

If he picks it up and if they are in the playoff race I think the Tigers should buy at the half way point and get another bp arm by trading away a valuable bat.

One more note, I think they need to change K Rod's role a bit. Maybe move him down as a setup man a few games. Mix it up with him a bit.

We won the series, I say rest him and try to bring him back when we play Arizona.

Can probably rest him for the west coast trip. vs. Oakland we should be alright without him and it won't make a difference if he's back at Aneheim as that place is a house of horrors for Detroit.

Try to get him back for the Diamondbacks and Orioles series.

I think you make a good point, I started hating football around the time they started replaying every fucking call and touchdown.

This country needs to learn how to live with human error in sports and a bullshit call. It took me until my 40's to realize that my favorite team can lose a game and I won't give a shit as soon as I turn the tv off.

Random question, I returned a bunch of empties today.

I always am really good about making sure the beer is empty before I get a new one out of the fridge. I put the empties in a plastic bag, store them in the garage and then take them in when there's a heap of empties. When I empty the returnables the fucking bag is always wet, it smells awful, there a bunch of weird shit growing in the bag and when I put the cans in the machine it seems like inexplicably there's always a small sip worth of beer still in the can. WTF?
