Bidding war for JV....

Washington Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg left Sunday's game after only two innings with an apparent injury.
He had thrown 51 pitches, walking three and striking out two. The Nationals were leading the Diamondbacks 5-0.

Re: 2017 Baseball trade deadline Meltdown thread!
Justin Verlander admits - briefly - Detroit Tigers tenure may now be over
There was a moment, however fleeting, that Justin Verlander wants to share with you.
It came after the top of the seventh inning on Monday night, after the 119th pitch of his night, a 98 m.p.h. fastball, was caught in centerfield. It was in the back of his mind – has been for quite some time now – and it came to the forefront as he walked off the mound to a standing ovation at Comerica Park.
It’s the narrative reporters write about and the feelings fans care about but something the Detroit Tigers’ veteran ace can’t think too much about – he has a job to do, after all.
But after a stellar seven-inning performance against the Royals, evasive as always about the trade rumors that continue to circle around his name and equally sensitive about the situation at hand, Verlander wants you to know that he heard that ovation. He felt it. And although he couldn’t acknowledge it – he’s simply too superstitious to tempt the baseball gods – he wondered the same thing you did.
He wondered if that was the final ovation he would get from a fan base that watched a kid from Goochland, Va., grow into a future Hall of Fame pitcher right before their very eyes.

Re: 2017 Baseball trade deadline Meltdown thread!
Justin Verlander Is The Dodgers' Ideal Trade Candidate, but His Red Flags Are Disconcerting
The most fascinating name on the trade market is a 34-year-old pitcher with a 4.54 ERA, the worst walk rate of his career, and a $65 million price tag million through 2019. By age, performance and money, that doesn’t sound like an attractive commodity. But this is Justin Verlander, the Cy Young Award runner-up and league strikeout champion just last year, and owner of a 3.39 ERA in 16 postseason starts.
The Detroit Tigers need such a major re-boot that prospects and financial flexibility are more valuable to them than the next two months and two seasons of a pitcher aging through his mid-30s. The Dodgers, Astros, Cubs and Brewers are among the contending teams scouting Verlander, who has full veto rights over a trade.

Re: 2017 Baseball trade deadline Meltdown thread!
There could be a twist in the Cubs’ pursuit of Justin Verlander
The talk also has included catcher Alex Avila, the kind of acquisition the Cubs need after they dumped veteran backup catcher Miguel Montero because he publicly blamed the pitchers for his lousy caught-stealing rate.
Some other rumors also include closer Justin Wilson, who has a fastball in the mid-90s and averages 12.58 strikeouts per nine innings this season.
But some rumors surprisingly spotlighted Michael Fulmer, the reigning Rookie of the Year whose 3.3 wins above replacement ranks among the top 10. Depending which executives you talk to, Joel Sherman of the New York Post wrote, the cost-controlled right-hander can be had.
In trying to connect some dots here, the Cubs reportedly have been reluctant to pick up all of Verlander’s $56 million salary the next two seasons, while the Tigers reportedly are reluctant to pay any part of what’s left. If Fulmer is dealt, the rumor is he would be packaged with another big salary, such as disappointing Jordan Zimmerman’s $80.7 million through 2020 and Justin Upton’s $88.5 million though 2021 if he doesn’t exercise his opt-out option after this season.

Probably necessary. Even if we 'blow it up' in order to rebuild time is still part of the equation. Going to need a few years to shed a lot of our awful contracts. If we can get another team to take them on, freeing up cash will be huge.

Re: 2017 Baseball trade deadline Meltdown thread!
this is what I've been sensing when I said they needed new leaders....
McCosky: Tigers malaise goes far deeper than Rondon incident
McCosky: Tigers malaise goes far deeper than Rondon incident
A toxic blend
For all the decorated veterans on this team, their work ethic and professionalism still above reproach, the Tigers’ clubhouse is a bad place right now. MLB Network analyst Mark DeRosa, who played 16 seasons in the big leagues, used the word “malaise” to describe the Tigers’ situation.
That’s exactly what it is. There is a core of solid, MLB citizens in that room. Ian Kinsler, Victor Martinez, Miguel Cabrera, Alex Avila, Justin Upton and Justin Verlander — the Tigers have a core of good veteran leadership.
Individually, they continue to do their work. They continue to say the right things and be about the right things. They continue to grind. But collectively, it’s not resonating, not gelling. Although the same players are there — the leadership voice within the room doesn’t seem nearly as strong.
The reason for that is obvious. With the exception of Upton and Avila, all those other players have had some massive individual struggles this season. Martinez, Cabrera and Kinsler, especially, have understandably been more preoccupied with getting themselves back on track than providing pep talks and good counsel in the clubhouse.
While they are still respected players and conscientious leaders, it’s gone stale. This mix, this environment, it’s no longer working. After long and ultimately disappointing playoff runs in 2011, 2012 and 2013, then the sudden exit in 2014 and now three subsequent non-playoff years — the joy has been sucked out of the room.
There is more acceptance of inevitable defeat. You hear the comment, “that’s just baseball,” way more often than you hear, “that’s completely unacceptable.”
And try as they might, the younger players — James McCann, Nick Castellanos, Mikie Mahtook — haven’t produced consistently enough to provide the necessary revitalization to spark or take some of the pressure off the older players.
(Though, to his credit, Michael Fulmer is trying his level best to lift the team onto his broad shoulders.)
It’s become a toxic swirl that needs to be, and will be shortly, flushed.

...this team was built for long ball and you have Cabrera hitting like shit and V Mart well past his sunset years as a ball player.
On the pitching side of the fence, our bullpen has been a disaster for over 6 years and we are paying a shit load of money for 3/5ths of our starting rotation and two of those pitchers are awful.

And lacks that kind of scrappy leader in the clubhouse.....Miggy isn't it. Victor isn't it. JUp isn't it. JV might have been as a pitcher but he may soon be gone. A relief pitcher doesn't have the standing to be that guy. I'm talking a Hunter Pence, Dustin Pedroia type. Etc, etc...and as long as those guys are around it's much harder for a young guy to assert himself.

Free up some cash, and sign Moustakis and Hosmer away from the Royals. Leader ship, and great contact hitters for a park like Comerica.

MLB trade deadline 2017: Tigers' Jose Iglesias on the market?
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias hasn't generated much buzz this month as a possible trade target. That's mainly because most of the contending teams don't need a shortstop.
But ESPN's Buster Olney said Thursday that the "sentiment in the market" is that the Tigers will trade Iglesias before Monday's deadline. Olney didn't elaborate on which teams might be interested in Iglesias.
Iglesias, 27, is under team control through 2018. He makes $4.1 million this year and is due to make more next season in his final arbitration year.
He's a career .272 hitter (.671 OPS) and is considered an above-average defender.
