I would be willing to bet the Tigers would have let him go. What you are suggesting would have been the Dodgers dream - If they rescinded his waiver the Tigers could not then traded him to Houston.aualum06 wrote:MSU addict wrote:
Bull shit. ANY team could have claimed Verlander off waivers and given up ZERO prospects. They just didn't want to pay his salary.
The tigers would have pulled him off waivers before letting him go for zero

Dodgers didn’t want him period. They are in game 7 of the ws and probably odds on favorites to make it back next year. They are doing something right. If they lose tonight, well sometimes you lose but they put together a really good team.

Like I said, fuck the Dodgers. Fuck all huge market teams. Shocking that the team with the highest payroll is a WS favorite.steveschneider wrote:MSU addict wrote:I would be willing to bet the Tigers would have let him go. I am just pointing out the absurdity of ghost suggestion that they deserve respect for wanting to win.

The last 4-5 series have proven you can be a sub 200 million team and win it all.

Clayton Kershaw now has recorded 11 outs in relief. That is one more than Yu Darvish recorded in his two starts, combined.

What are the odds the Astros use all 5 of their primary starting pitchers tonight? Keuchel & Verlander to finish this off? Totally feasible

Couple line drives hit very hard and barely finding astros gloves by inches. We’ll see.

Does this even matter? I mean I don't remember people around here saying "Yeah, but the Wings have the highest payroll in the NHL" when they were winning their cups.

The swill didn’t exist then lws.
But that said yeah who cares. “rich guy is allowed to spend rich guy money so he spends rich guy money.” Your grievance there is with mlb not the dodgers

Re: tWorld Series thread
Darvish definitely bombed but the Dodgers lineup was flawed.
Turner, Bellinger (recorded a record # of strikeouts) and Puig all struggled and are a huge reason they left 10 runners stranded.
Passing on Verlander will come up, but the reality is Dodgers have the highest payroll and are trying to shed a few contracts. When that’s your goal you don’t take on a contract like Verlanders.

Sure is a good thing the Astros didn’t take on a contract like Verlanders.... the tigers are still to pay them a handsome sum of money.

Yeah that is a bitter pill to swallow too. JV goes to the team that wins the WS after failing to win it here, and the Tigers still pay $10 million/year of his salary. Grrrrrrrr

They had the room for his contract and by August it was clear Verlander was in rock solid form. At July his era was 4 something, he’s 34 years old and getting paid 28 million (until 2020). No question the winning move was picking up Verlander and it makes sense why both teams made the moves they did.

It really is. Frustrating that they couldn’t open up the checkbook one more time for some solid relief pitching back when it mattered.
