Never stayed there, I always just dry camped in the woods but at least on this trip I'm doing State Parks. Have you been there before?
Yes it's a nice park

Great move, Goose. It’s cool that you’re making memories with the grandkids. I loved every minute of every day I spent with my grandpa.
On a side note: Regarding that German couple you bought the rv from; do they live in my little corner of the world? Not EL specific, but the greater Lansing vicinity?

No but it's 17 degrees with piles of snow on the ground and 70% of people in this campground are in tents.

No. Actually close to the Wags bolthole - Manistee area.
The lady has been sending my daughter goodwill messages all weekend.

No idea on the brewery and loading on smoked fish and pasties today.
Good campfire last night with gourmet roasted weinies.

We were camped at the Lower Falls, now at the Upper Falls.
Can now confirm the brewery is here and open at 10am.
I was up at 6am and 1\2 the tent people were gone.
Either early risers or frozen asses. I bet on the latter.
Wishing Bob was here so we could walk hand in hand to the Falls and MAGA.

Re: The Goose may be vacationing thread
At least there were no skeeters or other bugs to deal with. Stayed at Muskallonge SP in late July years back. Skeeters were bad but another bug was worse. Not sure what it was but they were about the size of a vitamin capsule. At night there were millions of them flying around. Didn't bite but got into everything. Went blueberry picking one day and the black flies chewed the hell out of us.LooseGoose wrote:Nordic wrote:

Grab pasties from places other than Lehto's to do a comparison and report back your findings, please.LooseGoose wrote:The Pantry wrote:Don't forget to grab some Lehto's on the way back from Up North.

Can we rent that out as a party bus? Hire the owner as the DD? How many strippers will fit in that beast?

I'ts a Ford 460 with a truck chassis under it so I'm thinking 6ish. We'll see.

Single tank I think since only 1 fill door. We pumped over 40 gallons into that beast to fill it even with the gauge showing 1/2 or more.

Re: The Goose may be vacationing thread
The main reason for this thread....
Ugly Store - Amazingly good donuts.
Not all the snow is gone in the UP
Bridge construction made the crossing more interesting.
Couple more pics going in the State Parks thread for anyone interested.

Looks like it was a blast. I’d have been grippin in single lane with that rig first time driving it over the bridge.

That picture was taken crossing south last night, it was the calmest I've ever seen the Straits in probably 50 or so crossings. The water was literally nearly glass smooth, in contrast going north on Friday morning the flags on the south side of the bridge were standing straight out. Not howling winds but definitely brisk - got my daughter pissed by extensively discussing the flying Yugo as we crossed.
Side note - stopped at the Cut River Store last night for the 1st time in a few years to buy smoked fish. Got a whole whitefish and a pound of lake trout. Didn't eat any last night because of the pasty feast so I just tried the whitefish. Still hands down the best smoked fish in Michigan at least. I'll be checking the trout out tomorrow.
If I were younger I'd buy the place, he's had it for sale for quite a while and is offering to train the new owners.

It’s for sale again? I read the history of the store on its website, and it looks like they repurchased the place in ‘07. The place seems to have gone to hell after they sold the first time.

It was for sale the last time I was there and there's still a sign out front so I'm assuming he's asking a solid price for it.

Hey Pantry and others with knowledge...
It looks like we're shooting for mid August for the long UP excursion. We hope to poke along and average only 100 miles or so a day once we get "up north" ;-) .
So far we have:
Drive H-58
Van Riper State Park
Quincy Mine tour
Fort Wilkins State Park
Seaman Mineral Museum
The Big Spring
Has anyone been to or camped at Wagner Falls State Park?
Isle Royale is out for this trip, too many small kids.

Goose, you’ll have a lot of additional sites to see from Clare northward. Clare, of course, being the true Gateway to the North️.

45th parallel is where up north starts. It’s where the Forrest biome starts changing from temperate to boreal.

Our annual fishing trip to Grand Marais is August 10-20th. It's 50-50 if I'm gonna make it up. If I do just check out the casino in Christmas or the grand Marais tavern and I'll be there more than likely lol.

Re: The Goose may be vacationing thread
Hey Pantry.
We basically read a bunch of articles/travel guides etc and made some lists of what we want to see. Then pared it down to fit our schedule. We wanted to shoot for 2-3 hours of driving a day along with a couple days to sit still if we chose.
I've got a list of pasty places to try based on MLive and some other reads. All of these had someone, somewhere love them. I've purposely left off the ones close to the bridge since I can get them more readily another time.
The Pasty Oven – Quinnesec
Toni's Pasties – Larium
Kaleva Cafe – Hancock
Connie's Kitchen – Calumet
Roy's Pasties – Houghton
Jean Kay's pasties – Marquette
Lawry's Pasties – Marquette
Muldoon's Pasties – Munising
I can't guarantee we'll hit all of those but the plan is to try and at least buy some to freeze at each and then try them at home.
The other food related try to stops on the trip:
King's smoked fish - Naubinway - I've read some good things on them
Hilltop Cafe - L'Anse - I guess their cinnamon rolls are great.
Suomi Bakery - Houghton - for a Pannukakku
Jamsen's Fish market in Copper Harbor
Congress Pizza - Ispheming - for a Cudighi topped pie
Soo Antlers for Poutine (my daughter wants this) - yuck
lol, I may gain 20 pounds - I need to plan on plenty of walking.
Anyone with suggestions is welcome since this is kinda fluid....

The 10th, so 2 weeks from Friday. We'll be lucky to get out of here by 7pm or so. The plan that night is to just get near or over the bridge then snooze.
I've been shopping around for a camera to upgrade my photo skillz for this trip. Anyone have a suggestion? I've not owned an actual digital camera for 10 years or more.

Flying in for a week either 8th - 15th or 10th - 17th. Be in between munising and grand Marais at fish camp.
