For Michigan State, this game’s significance goes beyond the outcome, keeping pace in the College Football Playoff or beating a rival. A national TV audience will see Spartans head coach Mel Tucker operate on the sidelines, implementing his game plan.

They will also see a Black head coach, at a school with a Black athletic director, with a long history of African Americans in leadership. It demonstrates Michigan State’s place in the college football world for diversity and representation.

“People take a lot of pride in our football team, its history and tradition,” Tucker said in a call 48 hours before Saturday’s game. “It’s a family atmosphere, with authentic, down-to-earth relationships. When I was a graduate assistant in 1997, I was welcomed here. And I got that same feeling when I came back in February 2020. It was like coming home again.”

Immortalized at Michigan State is the late Duffy Daugherty. The former Spartans head coach from 1954 to 1972 laid the foundation for college football integration. On his 1966 national championship team, Daugherty had 20 Black players, including George Webster, Bubba Smith and Gene Washington. Through Daugherty’s leadership, Michigan State became the first racially integrated program in college football.

Rick Neuheisel said the exact same thing today. Asked why a reporter would ask him that unless told by Harbaugh to ask that. He kept saying “ 9 days ago, PSU up next and that question was asked? Very curious”.

More than not sticking around, I blame the students for being idiots.  You're in Michigan.  It's Novemeber. The game will be going till 7:30-8p.  The forecast says what temp it will be. There wasn't a big surprise here. It isn't that hard to be prepared and put on some extra layers.

I don't begrudge some leaving.  I know plenty of non-students left, but it didn't seem like it was anywhere near the percentage of students that left.

Yep blows me away that these kids don't dress for the elements. It's been like this for years and not just football games. Take a drive around EL on a busy Friday night in February. Look at the girls standing in lines to get in bars ( sometimes for hours) wearing next to nothing in 10 degree weather.

I was actually thought the turnout was good for semi-shitty day. And crowd was into it. Have been all year. Sun popped out at kick, but it was sideways rain when we got to EL around 2. And it was cold. Halftime it is now dark... yeah people are going to bail, especially students. 

I've seen worse turnouts under peak Dantonio. You have the same opponent, record, K9, weather, kick time, etc. in 2012-2015... you would of had the same crowd.

With another NFL hiring cycle looming – against the backdrop of just four Black coaches hired for the 27 openings over the previous four cycles – Tucker’s case resonates for what it might have become on the pro level.

“I actually had to do some soul-searching when I was in the NFL,” Tucker told USA TODAY Sports during an exclusive interview as the Spartans (10-2) prepared for a Peach Bowl matchup against Pitt (11-2) on Thursday night. “I said, ‘Listen, you have to be OK with yourself as a person if you never become a head coach.’ I told myself that. Because I’m sitting there looking at guys that I coached with or that I knew that were head coaches. It was, ‘I can do that.’

“I was ready to be a head coach many, many years ago. When I interviewed for the Browns job in 2008, I firmly believed I could be an NFL head coach. Then they hired Eric Mangini.”

Mangini lasted two years and produced a 10-22 record. Tucker was reminded that in 2012 he lost out to Mike Mularkey for the Jaguars job. Mularkey was 2-14 in his one season.

“People always go, ‘Well, we want someone with experience.’ How the hell do you get that?" Tucker said. "It takes one person to say 'Yes, we’re going to take a chance on this guy.’ But I can remember sitting there saying, ‘No matter how good of a coach I am, I may never get that opportunity.’ “
