Let's talk about culling the herd
Time to purge.
Ideas?
I'm thinking we can change the inactivity clause to 6 months. This should eliminate all of the early adopters who have since fled. Haven't run the numbers though.

Re: Let's talk about culling the herd
I agree with that. I also think that some of the Spartiate's who do contribute should become Geronte. Those with low post count or those that haven't posted in the last 3 months should be moved down. It annoyed the shit out of me when Fletch came over here and started using the geronte against itself, or using the rules against themselves and that helped to move people back to the other site.
Right now there are probably around 20 regular posters, maybe a few more, but if something were to happen over on tRCMB and people flocked back here, I wouldn't want them changing rules.

I'm not sure why this is necessary, but I'm open to change

Re: Let's talk about culling the herd
it's a good idea.. people can always re-register.
I also liked InTenSity's idea of possibly re-shuffling the one group a bit. I'm not what the name of the group is or what their purpose is - but I trust that you know the group I'm referring to.

How many Gerontes would be left if you did the 6 month thing?

Re: Let's talk about culling the herd
To be clear, I'm not talking about deleting accounts. Only talking about removing posters from the Gerousia.
Nigel, not sure. Haven't run the numbers but we can tweak the time frame to suit. I think my smallest window would be 3 months though. We all take a break from the board once in a while.

We wouldn't delete them. Just "demote" them to Spartiate. There's no re-registering. The just lose voting privileges and their emblem.

Well let's do something fast before people catch on and start posting just to avoid the demotion. Get the Geronte total to 100. Or 50. Make up a time frame (last time they posted) to get that accomplished.

To be clear, you're talking about using this:
"The Ephorate may not change or update the charter without the consent, by vote (2/3 majority, ½ represented) of the Gerousia**.
**Exempted are changes made in the first year of the charter’s existence
"
To change this:
"A seat in the Gerousia is permanent and may only be forfeit in the following situations:
• At the request of the Geronte.
• Due to inactivity (1 year with no posts).
• Due to a perma-ban.
Activity assessment will occur annually in the first month of OT season.
"
To something like this:
"A seat in the Gerousia is permanent and may only be forfeit in the following situations:
• At the request of the Geronte.
• Due to inactivity (6 months with no posts).
• Due to a perma-ban.
Activity assessment will occur as deemed necessary by the Ephorate.

We have the ability to email them prior to "demotion", which I think we absolutely should do.

Why? If they haven't posted in 6 months? They can still post. It's not like they are losing any privileges. Are they not going to post anymore because they got demoted? They can apply for reinstatement if they want.

meh.. I appreciate the sentiment but if being myself is a "troll" by someone else's standards, not a big deal.. unlike folks at other, lesser message boards, I have more significant things in life that determine my self-worth.Other Teams Pursuing That wrote:What do tanfan and nigel get for running back to rcmb? Re: Let's talk about culling the herd
Although I don't post over there anymore, I will read a thread or two, especially when it gets slow here. I noticed in some thread that people didn't even realize this place was still going. An email might make them at least come back and take another look, maybe even start posting here. Why all the love for tRCMB, after being treated like shit by the owners, I won't understand. Hell, I still get emails from them to read articles.NigelUno wrote:

I think the last vote we had, 64 people voted. So, my scientific research indicates the Geronte should number between 50-75.

FYI...
There are 32 Gerontes that haven't posted in 180 days.
There are 85 Gerontes that haven't posted in 90 days.
There are 204 total Gerontes.

OK. That's probably a good idea. Or is it desperate?
Might be an interesting way to gauge people's psyche. Will they respond if we threaten to take away their internet posting status?

100 Gerontes is a good number. If we ever have to vote on something (important), we have to get the number down.
And if we get into profit sharing, I'd prefer something like 50.

Lots of football in the last 60 days. I'd say start from there. Also make posters like Jake a Geronte.Heat Miser wrote:

We might also be able to vote on things if we have enough again. At the same point, I'm glad we don't have the same voting rules in the betting league, that we do for the Agora, or we'd never make a play.

How about this? Here is my super exciting great idea for the day...don't demote anyone. Instead, create the Super Geronte (like 50 or 100 Gerontes)...and only those have voting privileges. That way we don't hurt anyone's feelings by demoting them. Who's with me?

Crap! Thought this was going to be about hunting and got excited.
I say stick the original plan. Not fair to tell someone they have a year, then change it up on them without warning.

We aren't banning people, just taking away their ability to have a voice in what goes on around here. They aren't here anyway, and I don't want some people coming back here to try to change policies while they aren't actively participating.LoneWolfSparty wrote:Crap! Again, they were told a year of inactivity. To change that on them is unethical.

Re: Let's talk about culling the herd
I think 90 days of inactivity is adequate. I don't think emailing is necessary but it's nice to do. Not that we're really trying to change things around here much, but if some of us thought there was a chance of enough participation to get issues voted up or down, there might be more things brought up for vote.
I say do it.

Re: Let's talk about culling the herd
Good discussion. Keep 'em coming.
Heat - That's exactly what I'm referring to. Correct on all counts.
One minor change though is that instead of at the discretion of the Ephorate, I would simply make it a "rolling month-to-month determination (if possible)". That's the way to word it so that it doesn't seem arbitrary, although in practice, it would end up being what you're suggesting.
The reason it is currently set to be executed at the start of OT season is that it was an annual thing so I thought it would be good to stick it in there with the rest of the housekeeping chores.
