Re: Let's talk about culling the herd
I think there are a couple of outcomes, both positive and negative:
1.)There would be a surge of posting by non-active board members just to hold their place. This might, but would probably NOT result in a sustained traffic jump.
2.)The posters that are on the fence about coming here (lurkers) would be turned off an go away for good.
Let's keep in mind that we're always one 247 programming or policy change blunder away from being popular again (not that any of us really care, just making the point).

So your vote is to distribute profits in a socialist manner?

Last thought for now.
I DO think that making voting relevant is the #1 priority here. Whatever we do, it needs to ensure that the voting process is more effective.

Not sure anything will surge.
But, that's not really the point. If we have to vote on something, we need to get it to 100 at most. Don't fight me on this. I know what I'm talking about.

It's decided then. Promote 100 Gerontes to Super Gerontes (with voting privileges). No one gets "demoted" from Geronte. They can keep their badges to make them feel good.

I don't have a problem with that. But, I'd suggest we need to trim the profit sharing Gerontes to like 10 then. Say, the 10 Gerontes with the most posts. Second?

I think only coming over here to stir up shit and then go back to another board and talk about how shitty this place is, is unethical. I also think that perma banning people from boards because they stop paying is unethical.LoneWolfSparty wrote:

I agree. 90 days is good.Rocinante wrote:I think 90 days of inactivity is adequate. I don't think emailing is necessary but it's nice to do. Not that we're really trying to change things around here much, but if some of us thought there was a chance of enough participation to get issues voted up or down, there might be more things brought up for vote.
I say do it.

Jake already was nominated and denied because we couldn't get enough votes. Should he be a Geronte ahead of others? Absolutely. Gotta cut some people though.

You could just change the voting rules to be a percentage of people who actually vote instead of a percentage of the total geisha.SeeRockCity wrote:Last thought for now.

This is another option.
I'm kind of torn because the whole idea of this site was to provide an inclusive place for the existing community to go and participate so demoting doesn't seem to be in line with that philosophy. On the other hand, it doesn't really make being a voting member mean anything if 95% of the posters are voters.
That said, this site has always been an experiment and should be allowed to evolve away from its roots if that is the direction it naturally takes.
Re: Let's talk about culling the herd
Bob will enjoy the fact that nedgo would be in the 90 day "demotion" crowd.

Re: Let's talk about culling the herd
What if you mix Nigel's idea and other idea's? Maybe the Geronte that are taken off Geronte status were just given a different status. If that person decides to return and start to participate, after 2 weeks or so they are just instantly reinstated? Call them Hypnos (God of Sleep) or something like that.SeeRockCity wrote:
