Matt apparently shot at a driver in a camper near Malone, a federal law enforcement source said. The driver called 911. When officers arrived, gunfire erupted and Matt was shot dead.

The only shots fired were by police. A shot gun was found on the escapee but he did not fire the weapon.

Everytime I read more about what what prisoners had in their possession and what they could do like cooking in their cells (they ones who didn't escape) I keep remembering the scene from a Scorsese movie where the mob boss had a corner suite of cells and the guards were bringing in steaks.
