Not complaining about these refs but the way this game is called is completely different than the way the game was called vs providence. Allowing a lot more contact this game.

ESPN: Michigan State finds extra gear in second half to turn away Louisville

Izzo inserted redshirt freshman Kenny Goins to help stop the bleeding on the defensive side of the floor and changed the tenor of the game.

The clear path to the rim that Louisville guards Trey Lewis and Damion Lee enjoyed early shrank considerably with Goins in the game. His block late in the first half helped propel a 9-0 run for the Spartans that erased most of Louisville's early lead. The former walk-on said his goal was to dominate the boards against a Cardinals team that led the nation in rebounding margin heading into Wednesday's game. The Spartans won that battle, 40-30, thanks to his 13 rebounds.

"The difference in the game was Kenny did do a hell of a job on the boards," Izzo said. "That was the difference."

Windsor: MSU looks to have makings of something special

Izzo said earlier this week he wanted to know how his team would handle a little adversity. They'd shown guts in the comeback win over Kansas and again against Providence in the Wooden Classic title game.

But this felt different.

They were getting hit in the mouth at home — until Kenny Goins came in off the bench to start cleaning up the boards, slowing all of Louisville's second-chance points. And Bryn Forbes started shooting from range with purpose.

In those moments, you can see the pieces of this team congeal, and watch the cohesiveness and skill assert itself. Louisville, who had played a rugged and gutty game for most of the night, finally started to wilt.

"Tonight was like old times," said Izzo.

He was talking about his team's will, about their fight, about the crowd grabbing that fight and blowing the roof off the building.

The only thing that has me scratching my head is on Sunday the ref crew was calling every bit of contact.

Last night they were allowing a ton of contact.

It was like two different set of rules were allowed both nights. I'm not complaining about any calls in particular, just that based on those two TV viewings I can't tell which ref crew was calling the game more accurately.

The two crews were polar opposites of eachother.
