His most memorable play came in a 1960 game against the Baltimore Colts, when he scored a 65-yard catch-and-run touchdown as time expired to lead the Lions to an improbable comeback.

The Colts had scored the go-ahead touchdown seconds earlier on a Johnny Unitas pass to Lenny Moore. The Lions returned the kickoff to the 35-yard line and, with 10 seconds left and Baltimore in a prevent-type defense, Gibbons caught a pass across the middle from Earl Morrall and raced down the sideline for the game-winning score.

According to ESPN, Gibbons' touchdown remains the longest pass play to end a game in regulation in NFL history, just ahead of the Aaron Rodgers' Hail Mary pass to Richard Rodgers for 61 yards against the Lions last year.

Detroit Lions’ up-tempo offense to feature more no-huddle looks

ALLEN PARK >> Going fast and not being effective is just going fast, according to Lions coach Jim Caldwell.

So, of course, that is not the plan for the Lions offense in the first full year under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.

Up-tempo is the key word and no-huddle is a close second.

“I don’t want you to get the wrong impression, (no huddle) is not all we’re going to do. It’s part of what we do. It depends on the team that you’re facing, depends on the game, depends on your personality, health of it,’’ coach Jim Caldwell said on Tuesday. “It depends on how much the young guys can grasp. How much you want to utilize it, there’s a lot of factors. …’’

In the first two preseason games there have been plenty of no-huddle situations. It’s noticeably different over last season when it was used Occasionally.

Look for more no-huddle in the third preseason game on Saturday at the Baltimore Ravens when the starting offense (or most of it) may play the entire first half.

Cooter has been working to put more of his stamp on this offense.

Speed clearly is a key.

And if the early returns are any indication, first-year Lions GM Bob Quinn -- a former member of the Patriots' front office -- might have some of that in him.

Emphasis on the early there. The Lions still have 78 players on Quinn's first roster, and will need to make three more moves to satisfy the 75-man limit that will be imposed at 4 p.m. today.
