Peek inside MSU's new $156M housing complex

EAST LANSING — While its name harkens back to the founding of Michigan State University, the new 1855 Place project is far from old fashioned.

The $156 million housing and mixed-use development opened the first of its new apartments to students earlier this month. With stainless steel appliances and amenities like an in-unit washer and dryer, it's a significant departure from life in MSU's existing residence halls or family apartments, said Ray Gasser, interim director of Residence Education and Housing Services.

The two finished buildings are available to MSU students with families, Gasser said. Of the 104 apartments available, 96 were leased as of Tuesday. Rent for a one or two-bedroom apartment in the family units costs $800 or $925 a month, respectively, and includes all utility costs. When completed, their will be 429 apartments.
