Re: The Official Pasty Thread
I didn’t know there was a pasty thread. The best I ever had was my mom’s, of course. She grew up in Negaunee. My dad took over the duty after she passed, and did a pretty good job. I have found them in the Black Hills and in the coal region of PA. Seems if there is mining, you might find pasties. I had one in London once, wasn’t impressed.

Was it Up North or just northern lower peninsula? Nothing from the latter would be worth having shipped.AvgMSUJoe wrote:Any pastys in Lansing area? Sounds good. Saw a shop up north this summer but I didn't stop.

Tried the beef. Filling was decent despite no rutabaga. Dough/crust wasn't even close to decent. More like the worst pie crust I ever had. Fell apart trying to put in the oven. The Pantry wrote:Ex-SIL and I still talk few times a year to catch up. She was in my area today and stopped by with a token of appreciation. The Salvation Army near her makes pasty couple times a year as fund raiser. Looking forward to trying these out...even the chicken and veggie.

Engaging in this thread might just be the biggest mistake you’ll ever make. There’s one guy in here who is, shall we say, a pasty snob who revels in making others feel bad about their pasty stories and preferences. He also can’t be trusted to keep his word, but that’s a separate matter related to the Where does Up North begin? thread, although it spills over into other threads such as this one.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m pretty sure Negaunee is certified Pasty territory and I’m pretty sure my mom’s recipe (beef, potatoes, onions, rutabaga) is a classic. I’ll try to avoid the arguments.tGreenWay wrote:PennSpartan wrote:I didn’t know there was a pasty thread. The best I ever had was my mom’s, of course. She grew up in Negaunee. I actually enjoy Jean Kay’s, pretty much the only local pasty I like, along with Cal’s Party Store. JKs also makes an awesome Greek spinach wrap that is my go to once or twice a week, which I will miss immensely. The owner is second generation and has run the place for 50 years. Jean Kay was his mom and he has no kids. Simply didn’t want to sell it.

Do you remember a place between US-41 and the railroad tracks in Negaunee called Red Onion Pasty?

It’s called Irontown Pasties now, at least at that location. The original was in Escanaba and is now call Dobbers.

I don’t think anything needs to change. If you know the UP as well as you claim, you’d know that changing anything would be the death of the place. The locals will come out with their pitchforks.

Re: The Official Pasty Thread
No I don’t. But I literally haven’t been up there in over 35 years. I remember a place called Lawreys and a place called Madeleines. But we always ate my Grandma’s, aunts, and moms pasties, which were all the same recipe. Both of my grandparents lived just off 41, and we used to play on the railroad tracks across the road. Always came home with red sneakers because of the iron ore pellets. Fond memories. The Pantry wrote:Never mind Greenway...never been north of Clare.PennSpartan wrote:

Re: The Official Pasty Thread
From what I've read the original Red Onion was the Negaunee location. Owners of Dobbers called their place Red Onion, stealing the name from the Negaunee place. They were legally forced to change the name and it became Dobbers. Never had Dobbers. Pasty from the Negaunee Red Onion was excellent.Motown Spartan wrote:The Pantry wrote:

Think I looked up Irontown way back. Their menu was full of weird stuff they claim to be pasty.

Re: The Official Pasty Thread
Red Onion was there in the late 70's, early 80's. On North Teal Lake Ave just south of 41. Great pasty. Would stop there if passing through Negaunee during business hours.PennSpartan wrote:No I don’t. But I literally haven’t been up there in over 35 years. Mostly around the mines in the UP, Cornish miners sort of invented them back in the UK.
Re: The Official Pasty Thread
Pretty sure Fieri's done shows from pasty places in both Wisconsin and Minnesota but don't recall any shows from UP pasty joints. He should hit Toni's in Laurium.

Have not. But I must tell you about a new take on pasties that I’ve had recently…Bierocks Pasty from Irontown in Negaunee. Now, their pasties are good, above average, but I typically don’t go there because I’m not a big fan of their crust. Stopped in the other day and John, the owner, had me try the Bierocks and Ho-Lee-Shit was it fantastic! Ground beef, jalapeños, banana peppers, cabbage, cream cheese and spices soaked in beer overnight (this batch was Oberon). It was delicious not-a-pasty pasty for sure.
