Veteran LBs hope to spread energy to young Michigan State defense

EAST LANSING — Mike Tressel always has been a high-intensity coach.

That shouldn't change now that Michigan State's co-defensive coordinator has resumed coaching linebackers, a position group that's expected to be among the Spartans' deepest and most experienced this season.

“We try to be the core of the defense in the linebacker room, we challenge ourselves,” Andrew Dowell said Monday. “Coach Tressel challenges us and we challenge ourselves to always bring energy to practice and let other position groups feed off of us.”

Chuckled when I read that too. I guess I understand what he means by it. Maybe with returning starters he feels that the position players defer to those starters and maybe aren't as intense. Not naming a starter and having two spots open, I can imagine those four guys are putting esxtra time in the film and weight room and in the playbook too. Like you say, from last year, it has to improve. Was disapointed in the play back there, but we never really know true injuries or what was going on back there last year. I think we'll be better. Certainly hope so.

Further, while we know him to be an asshat, those on the team probably don't know him at all, and he can tell the story how MSU helped prepare him to succeed in business. I'm taking the high road here in not pointing out all the other messy stuff.
