Re: Roc's Solar Eclipse Party - August 21, 2017
Wonder how wildlife will react to the eclipse. Even at 78.5% here, will it affect their internal clocks? Birdlife becoming quiet and grounding themselves? Squirrels retreating to nests? Raccoons, skunks, deer, etc coming out to forage? Bats? Might be an interesting day to spend at the zoo.
Be interesting to see how dogs react. Cats won't care.

Pantry, you bring up a good point, but you should probably worry more about werewolves, chupacabra and run of the mill crack heads.

1) Werewolves only come out on a full moon...a solar eclipse is the exact opposite.
2) There has never been a Chupacabra sighting in Michigan. Besides, they prefer goats and would be looking for Pylon.
3) Troy police immediately bust any crackhead crossing a city border.

Was really looking forward to this eclipse until a few minutes ago. Now, I'm bummed.
For some reason I remembered the '79 eclipse at State being about 40% obscuration. With this new one being 78.5% in the Detroit area I figured it would be much cooler.
Just looked up a map of the '79 eclipse. It shows Michigan was 78.9% obscured.

Even at that percentage, what was it like? I was just a very young lad at that time.

Remember the first noticeable darkening after lunch...time of day very similar to this one. Recall the day being mostly cloudy with occasional clearing.Senior Dickfist wrote:The Pantry wrote:Was really looking forward to this eclipse until a few minutes ago. Now, I'm bummed.

Best way I can describe it...eerie. Maybe just me, but around the max of the darkening things looked strangely more defined.

Would have been my Freshman year, I would have been living in Wonders so pretty close to you. I just don't remember that at all.
I remember the squirrel or raccoon killing all the power. Wasn't that 79?

Too bad you missed the snowpocalypse of Jan 78. It was wild. Drinking age was 18. South Complex drained QD and Shoprite of beer and booze. Pretty sure all the SC dorms had to restock on cafeteria trays because of the number stolen to sled of Munn's roof.

I've felt that way after strong thunderstorms. I don't know if it's the heightened awareness, the light conditions or a combination of both. I'm in Kzoo and we're supposed to be at 82.5%.

In Total Eclipse’s Path, Hope and Uncertainty in Rural Kentucky
WICKLIFFE, Ky. — A bluff south of the downtown, topped by a 95-foot metal cross, overlooks the states of Missouri and Illinois, and the convergence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
It is a great spot to look up at the sky, so the mayor, George Lane, had a flier drawn up: “View 3 states 2 rivers and a Total Eclipse.”
Wickliffe was going to join the rolling national boomtown on Aug. 21, when millions of people are expected to pour into the 70-mile-wide path of total eclipse that runs from Oregon to South Carolina. It is a coast-to-coast ribbon composed mostly of rural areas and small cities, many having struggled to attract people and money until a fluke of lunar orbit did it for them.
Farmers in some states are renting camping spots in their fields for hundreds of dollars; hotel rooms have been booked for years. The new Holiday Inn in nearby Paducah was booked before it opened.
But the millions flocking to see the eclipse will also mean a logistical headache, a claim on local resources in places like Wickliffe that have few resources left.

when I hear people getting excited about the eclipse, all I can think of is "yeah, I guess it's kind of rare or whatever.. but it's just gonna get dark-ish for a minute or two and then the sun's gonna come back out"..
I guess that it's entirely possible that I'm not able to fully appreciate the miracle that it is.

We got one pair free at a library (they only had 3 left, so would only give us one pair), but then my BIL got us some at 7-11, that was a 2 pack for 3 or 4 bucks. Yeah, I thought they were scam ones, too, but I looked them up and they are one of the approved types listed by the American Astronomical Society. So they're out there in retail stores and libraries, if you want.Death Roe wrote:I bought solar eclipse glasses on Amazon, and they turned out to not be approved to work during the eclipse. Re: Roc's Solar Eclipse Party - August 21, 2017
I will appreciate the rarity/historical aspect of it, but I don't have any big expectations, like some nerd on a news story I saw that said it is a "life changing experience" to witness an eclipse. I also won't be in the totality area, so the sun will still be showing partially the whole time, meaning it will probably look like early evening or something maybe? That's assuming that it's not raining, which is probably a 50/50 proposition.Robert J Sakimano wrote:I haven't heard that..LooseGoose wrote:
