Anyway, practices were almost always open and after players would let you carry their helmet to the lockeroom. I carried Altie's helmet for two summers. He was a very cool dude and would invite me in for a gatorade for a job well done.

I was probably 8 and wanted to crawl under a rock. Skladany diffused the situation by saying, "I hear beer is good for your hair." Laughter ensued. Crises diffused.
