Just saw on the local news the fire department warning about the hazards of frying a turkey. I love it when the grease spills over and hits that flame!

Only if there's a lot of drinking involved...and if that's the case, why waste a good time with a lot of pointless walking around?InTenSity wrote:Wanna go golfing?I.B. Fine wrote:By the pool, with a cold beer, in Fort Myers.

Just make sure you're in the garage when you drop the icy bird into the boiling oil.

Parsnips are also a highly underrated veggie.
We slice them fry size, boil half way, then fry them in butter. Amazing. It’s a common side dish in genera all year round with my family.

Perfect placement would be near some oily rags and piles of dry scrap wood.

I have still never deep fried a turkey. I’d like to but I won’t buy a fryer because I’m sure I won’t do it more than once. Someone has to let me borrow one.

You can buy used ones for nearly nothing on CL - I'm assuming people that have had "Floyd" experiences have been instructed to sell no matter the loss.

Cheapskate Roc will probably try to rent a bird, too.

But you need that extra flame to make sure the turkey is dead.

The one time I did it I thought it was just ok and I got the shits that night. And then I dumped the used (cooled) oil over the fence in the snow into my neighbor's yard at midnight because he's an asshole.

Ha! That’s a good story. Turkey is so good roasted in the oven I’ve never had any desire to fry one.
A few thanksgivings when I was away from family in New York I’d go to a bbq joint in Times Square and get their feast. Smoked turkey now that is the shit.

I really like parsnips even though they are a bit on the sweet side. Rutabaga has a little sweetness too but also has a pleasant bitter side. If I had to pick between mashed potatoes and mashed rutabaga with turkey gravy...rutabaga.Dendrobates wrote:Parsnips are also a highly underrated veggie.

Make mashed rutabaga pretty much the same as mashed potatoes. Cube to roughly 1 inch, add some sea salt and boil to desired doneness. I'm not a fan of super smooth and creamy mash potatoes...usually means the potatoes are overdone. Prefer a bit of chunkiness for some texture.

Pies are baked, now nothing to do until 5am when the bird goes in.

Props to all of you for not advocating that absurd "cook the bird upside down" nonsense that Perles is always pushing.

... and it better not involve rutabagas

Never even heard of one. My daughter and I both love cinnamon so I need to investigate that.
