Re: John Beilein to the Cavs
Valenti actually made some good points today.
Narrative: Juwan Howard is a Chicago legend!
Reality: You ain't recruiting Chicago without cheating
Made a decent point that Howard was probably their fifth choice. Also said they threw money at the wrong coach. If they were serious about basketball they would have given him and not Khakis the lifetime contract. For a school with "deep pockets" they sure were cheap with a proven commodity in B______

Agreed.
I'm guessing they gave Beilein the strong impression they weren't going to renegotiate his contract (again) just a year later. He met with Cleveland and didn't even bother to see if UM would match. Didn't tell the assistants. Didn't tell anyone. The AD was shocked.
He gets more money and an easier job.

As a Spartan fan I love the hire. No head coaching experience, no recruiting experience. I figured he was just getting a courtesy interview but, nope, they full on gave him the job.

He's a better coach than what they deserved. He finally acted upon it. Don't blame him one bit.

I meant the Harbaugh stuff. It doesn't take a brilliant mind to figure out you should reward the coach who actually wins.

Is this actually a done deal? It doesn't seem like a done deal but people are talking about it here like it's a done deal.
Also are they going to embrace cheating? Maybe I'm just a weary jaded soul like OTPT but I don't see JH having success given his background without cheating just a little bit.

Now hearing he's interested in the MIO flash, Jay Smith as an assistant. However, the sad news is Jay is fighting stage three prostate cancer. Don't blame me, I'm just spreading gossip. I like to spread gossip. It's fun. (not really, but I did this time.)

Re: John Beilein to the Cavs
I know that we want to bash UM and all, but come on, this line of thinking is just ridiculous. As if we all just work for MSU and never have/would leave for an easier, less stressful job, with more respect, and that pays more money...because Go Green. If he left for another college, and then said that, yeah, you might have a point. But not when he goes to the NBA.GRR Spartan wrote:steveschneider wrote:Beilein saying he left the best university in the world. Really? Go fuck yourself.

Yeah, nothing about it in the local papers. If it stalls out much longer that will be pretty revealing.
I listened to about 15 seconds of Chris Webber on the Eisen show before I felt a strong gag reflex go off. I'd have to rank the Fraud 5 right up there with Pete Rose as a bunch of chumps that did some self inflicted damage and then keep looking towards that sport/institution/league for recognition they don't deserve.

My feeling is that Howard wants an NBA job. If I was in the hiring process, I’d think long about it. Do you hire him only to be burned in two years again? Become known as a stepping stone school?

This.
Howard was recruited out of Chicago. The city of broad shoulders and a well funded AAU syste where those coaches are unregistered agents.
Every one of his Fab Five teammates were "helped" by Ed Martin and others who got that class everything from great off campus apartments, $500 designer sweaters to cash stashed under cakes he brought into their locker room.
If anyone thinks Juwan Howard can "recruit" like Calipari and not get caught they are whistling through graveyards.

Been tuning in and out (mostly out because the morning show is awful) of 97.1. They just had Wojo on to talk about it and he's heard nothing since yesterday.
I think it is more likely Howard says 'thanks but, no thanks' and stays in the NBA.
I thought Nigel's question of 'if it is Howard why haven't they hired him yet?' was a bit premature. But now that the interview is done, and options are dwindling, I would think there would be a press conference announcement this morning.

I don't know if I buy the NBA angle. I saw some tweet that seemed like a credible UofM sports source that said the interview went really well and one of the points was he wanted to be there for a long time. Also, I'm sure Juwan got Wade and Lebron to tweet he'd be great for the job. I genuinely think Juwan wants the job my guess there's stuff about Juwan that is giving UofM second thoughts about hiring him. The cheating scandal for one.

I'll also add as some one that didn't just hate the Fab 5, I fucking loathed them so this is all good for me. Either he won't get the job and further damage the relationship between the school and those turds or he gets it and it will be a complete train wreck adding another scar to their legacy. Fine with me!

If he was their guy all along, then what's the delay? That's my point.
The only reason he would go back to the NBA at this point, is if UM's background check finds something fishy.

My point was it seems like he would rather be a head coach in the nba. I would give this a strong thought if I was hiring. Is he going to be here two yeas for resume building?

I think he's interviewed for Head Coaching jobs in the NBA. Not sure how serious teams were though. I think there's an assistant above him on the Heat staff (I could be wrong about that).
UM will be awful next year. That won't look good on a resume.

Just read an article about Ed Cooley turning down the job. The comments are gold. Uofm fans saying he wasn’t offered and is playing it that way. Which is fairly believable but I just love how their egos get hurt so easy. They can’t believe anyone would take Providence over uofm.
