His five-year deal with the Cavs is a head scratcher, as owner Dan Gilbert is likely to fire him after a season-and-a-half.

THE GREAT RECRUITING CHASEHOW A DETERMINED U-M WON HOWARD AND WEBBER

Bending a rule

Jannie Mae wasn’t Juwan’s only influence, however. There was also a fast-talking, round-headed marketing major named Donnie Kirksey, and getting him on your side took more than smacking your lips at his cooking. An opportunist from his loafers to his cellular phone, Kirksey had attached himself to Juwan early, joining the staff at Chicago Vocational High School, as an unpaid assistant coach, and befriending young Howard when he was a freshman. Kirksey had been a player at CVS, too, back in the early ’80s. But he never had Juwan’s kind of talent.

“You gotta be smart, Juwan,” he would say. “You can’t mess with no bad influences.”

Donnie declared that he was a good influence, and so, in addition to coaching Juwan, he let Juwan stay at his house, which was close to the school. And when Juwan got a driver’s license, he let him use his car. This goes on all over America, outsiders attaching themselves to high school basketball talent, hoping to ride their coattails to the big time.

“Kirksey is really influential,” Dutcher had warned Fisher. “We need to have him on our side.”

So they recruited Kirskey as well. They phoned him. They encouraged his dreams of getting into the college coaching business. At one point, Fisher would actually interview him for an assistant coach position at Michigan — even though he was nowhere near qualified for the job.

In the summer between Juwan’s junior and senior years, Fisher hired Donnie Kirskey to work at his basketball camp in Ann Arbor, and paid him well. Would he have hired a volunteer assistant coach from Chicago under other circumstances? Of course not. But there was a plus with hiring Kirksey.

With the money they gave him, he paid for Juwan.

And suddenly, the prize recruit was on the Michigan campus.

This is not really illegal — it has been done before — but it shows how far coaches, Fisher included, will go in pursuit of the Next Great Recruit. Maybe years back, Fisher would have frowned on this practice...

What a wild coincidence how both the freep and news writers came up with the same list of coaching candidates, with the exception of Pitino.

They're still celebrating football wins from over a hundred years ago. The basketball celebration of the fraud five is just getting started.

I don't see Howard being a real candidate.

He hasn't been a head coach, and I think there are people in AA that aren't fond of the Fab Five.

heard some talk of Billy Donovon (yeah, right) - Brad Stevens (unlikely) and the hot young coach at Texas Tech (good luck with that)...

I don't see a household name (at least within the household names in the basketball world) landing there. Maybe a hot young assistant, etc - but they want a Bill Self-like guy there to validate their feelings - I don't see that happening. I don't think Coach K is leaving Duke for UM, Roy Williams will still be at Carolina.. Izzo ain't makin' the trip down 96 and 23.

Something doesn't smell right to me.

The 5 year contract he signed last year had a rollover provision every year (so that it always extended out 5 years)...unless one side chose not to extend it. I wonder if UM pulled the plug on the rollover last month.

$0 buyout for Beilein, get more money from 5 yr deal with Cavs, get fired in a couple years, retire and still get paid, never have to hear 'but Harbaugh' ever again.

Just seems odd. Talked to the Pistons, got a new contract/extension/more $...talks about the future at UM...kind of says he's done flirting with the NBA...then a year later bolts out of the blue.

OKC said they expect Donovan back next year if he wants to come back. Would probably be his final year at OKC if he doesn't make a deep run in the playoffs. From what I've read Donovan was fed up with the cheating in the NCAA when he left so maybe those memories are still lingering. If he does want to come back though the UofM job is a pretty attractive gig. I actually think there is a chance he makes the move but I don't think it happens. Donovan is a big a deal and not sure he'd want to be second fiddle to Harbaugh.

He said he was "surprised". I'd go with shocked.

The no buy out thing is a typical arrogant UM stance...like 'why would anyone want to leave the great University of Michigan?'

He flirted with the Pistons and got a raise/extension. Not putting in a buy out at that point was idiotic.

Not really, since Beilein is no longer a coach in the BigTen he can't say that Izzo is the 2nd best coach.

Going into his fourth year (I think it’s going to be 4th). Yeah, he’s got to put Texas deep into the Tourney. Still a big name, though, just not talked about as much because everyone kept waiting for him to make his move.
