Re: Coronavirus?? We gone?
Where’s the respirators, gauze, masks and essential supplies to deal with the wave that’s going to hit next week? Hospitals in Seattle, New York and Boston have both hands up in the air waving for help and nothing. You read stories of doctors and nurses using the same dirty mask all day, or missing swabs for testing, or lacking the proper safety gear. It’s just sad to watch other countries out perform this country on handling this and the real human cost is coming. It’s go time right now to start rushing supplies to these areas and it’s not happening.

They were all looking to profit off our pain. Another senator sold stock after private briefings.
A US Senator whose husband is Chairman of the NYSE profited from insider info while millions of Americans portfolios have taken a serious hit. Another Senator also profited (and tipped off donors) while lying to the public that everything was fine.
And your concern is it being discussed on the wrong internet forum?

To be clear, the only people politicizing this thread are the people trying to stifle the American public as we demand answers from our leadership as people die and the economy collapses during a global pandemic.
It's really that simple.

I don't know, if someone thinks that tSwill is a platform for the American public to "demand answers from our leadership", they're probably overestimating the readership/influence of this place by a factor of, oh, probably 10 million or so.

but trying to stifle people upset at the grotesque leadership in our country because it makes their political senses sad is an unfortunate way to live life.. I would suggest that they take time away from the board as a form of self-care, though they can certainly do and say as they wish.

Well, at least you walked back the drama queen hyperbole from the previous post. That was my point, that it is just ranting and bitching by a couple of people, not demanding answers from the leadership by the American public.
Look, I dont care what you, pantry, or anyone else posts about the politics. You know I post and read over in tBin from time to time. But it always has a way of leading to back and forth sniping and name calling, and basically tons of nonsense posts that drowns out good, rational discussion. The arguing about posting overly-partisan shit has the same result. I admit that I share in the blame for that by posting this, which is why I've avoided this latest restart of this discussion over the past couple of days. I just wanted to say that and will do my part to not contribute to the back and forth nonsense beyond this post.

Looking for ideas on how I can help. Anyone have any?
We saw a cause where hospitals are asking people with sewing skills to make masks. I don't know how to sew at all but my wife has me convinced I can cut out a pattern and do simple pinning and this will help her be more productive. I'm stuck inside and want to help. Looking for other ideas. I think this is a time to be patriotic and get shit done.

I'm no doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once, and homemade medical equipment (or medical equipment made in an auto plant) sounds like trouble to me. How do you sterilize them? What if you and/or your wife already have it?

failing that, just be nice to people. I know it sounds insane, but a smile when you're out on a walk can go a long way. Check in with friends and family. Social isolation hits people very differently. If you think about someone, send them a text. It could mean a lot.
my colleagues and I held a video chat yesterday designed specifically to just see each other, a sort of 'wellness check' - it was designed to last 30 minutes but an hour and a half later, we were all laughing, talking, needling at each other about dogs barking in the back, some people looked half-asleep, barely dressed, etc - - it was actually quite therapeutic.

This is an example of one place asking for it. They collect and sterilize them. Also, I saw on the news doctors in hospitals in surgeries are using masks that are so overused they are falling off their faces, they are dirty and they are re-using the same mask over and over. They are resorting to drastic measures and asking the public to make them at this point.

It's really that simple.
Here is the flaw in your assumptions Bob. You believe anyone that doesn't want to talk politics here must be a Trump supporter. Or maybe they have their head in the sand. Or not Great Americans. That couldn't be further from the truth. Most of us just don't care to get into the inevitable political pissing match and read the countless pages of nonsense that always follows. It happens every... single... time... politics are injected into a conversation. Not just here, but everywhere. Politics are a polarizing topic for some. Now more than ever. Which is why there is a place for it, so it doesn't infect every conversation.
And yes, this topic (and others) toes the line of politics. The congressman selling stock story is "disgusting" and newsworthy. But when the post opens with, "Does this count as too political?" or "I hope this post doesn't upset some of you", you're just being passive aggressive douche and looking to pick a political fight. Your not looking for a legit conversation about it. If that was the case, most of us wouldn't care. Hell we might actually listen to what you have to say.
No one is stifling the political conversation. There is a place for it so the rest of the discussion can take place.

I'm 100% sure it did too. Discussing contingency plans need to happen well in advance of actually needing to execute it. Waiting till it is needs to happen is too late. But then the 'telephone game' starts, like with recruiting and coaching searches. We all just need to remember to take it with a grain of salt.

Great question, Steve. Thanks for posting this.
Everything Bob said is on the money.
It is so hard because of the social distancing.
Here is something that has worried me: the digital divide. Schools have went to distance learning, and many ISPs are offering free service to low income families and lifting data caps. That is great, but what about the students with inadequate technology? Not every student has a computer at home, and libraries and campuses are shut down. Without public access computers, now that research paper has to be typed out on their phone? Anybody know of resources students in such circumstances can access?

Un fucking acceptable for a health care system this good.

Yep, going back to Iraq war even though it was unpopular everyone wanted the best armor and safety equipment for our troops. It's the same deal, our medical professionals are the front lines in this 'war'. Lets get them the safety equipment they need. It's unacceptable that our doctors are afraid they don't have the proper equipment and that they are afraid they'll infect their families.

A small PSA here.
If you need to interact with a physician, please be calm and patient with them. ALL of them, regardless of specialty are overloaded with the chaos. Insurance claims are overloaded with home care requests, and we do not have enough nurses. Shit is going to hell, and patients that do not have Coronavirus are taking a huge hit. Everyone within this healthcare system is trying with what we got.
My anxiety levels for the patients I work with are through the roof. Their care is being compromised with all of this, which comprises infants to the elderly.
This is nuts.

I've got my yearly physical scheduled for Monday, which is required for my insurance. They called to confirm my appointment. I was pretty shocked. They said they are not treating sick patients. They are sending them to Beaumont. Still doesn't make me feel any more comfortable about it.

That is great, but what about the students with inadequate technology? Not every student has a computer at home, and libraries and campuses are shut down. Without public access computers, now that research paper has to be typed out on their phone? Anybody know of resources students in such circumstances can access?
It is going to vary by district. Every district I know or have heard about are different.
Dade County (Miami) had handed out more than 45,000 laptops as of a couple of days ago. They apparently have 200,000 on hand, but are trying to limit the giveaways to those that dont have anything else in their home.
Broward County (Ft Lauderdale) began handing them out today and supposedly have 94,000 available. Also only for those that dont have access to a device at home.
My daughter isn't in public school, so that's obviously very different, but she has been required to have a chromebook since 5th grade (shes in 8th now). They set up school google accounts for all preK-4th grade and they need to use laptops from home. The school loaned out extra chromebooks to students in need.
My nephews down here are in a charter school and they are doing class by zoom on their own computers. I'm not sure what they did for kids that dont have computers.
Meanwhile, as of earlier this week, my nephew's school in Michigan didn't know how they were going to do it. Maybe e-mailing and even snail mailing work and assignments, but that is difficult for some subjects and some grade levels.
So basically that is 5 different school systems that I'm familiar with, and 5 different set ups/processes. Not all districts around the country are going to have laptops available to those in need, so it is going to be tough in places.

Re: Coronavirus?? We gone?
Hey S. Florida peeps. Rumors are flying around that we are about to go on lockdown. Supposedly the courts were told to shut down for 2 days. Heat should be able to verify that. I've also seen a video that was supposedly taken in Boca of a train full of tanks heading our way.
That doesn't make sense though, because why would they ruin all the roads with tanks on them.
Anyway, supposedly lockdown for 2 weeks, no going out.
Stock up on your liquor and beer.

I can confirm the courts are closed. A train full of tanks sounds like a wingnut conspiracy theory.

Great question, Steve. Thanks for posting this.
Everything Bob said is on the money.

Thanks, Miami. I was also thinking about college students. Especially community college students. I think we would be surprised how many depend on campus technology resources.

I'm talking about grotesque incompetence and leadership... you just inserted politics into it.Nordic wrote:Nordic wrote:
There is a place for it so the rest of the discussion can take place.
which is fine.. I don't mind. But some people do.
