If MSU plays ND in the Fiesta.. could MSU play vs a Fickell coached team?

MSU could face Fickell. When Kelly left CMU for Cincinnati just after CMU's MAC championship game, he started right away and coached Cincinnati in their December bowl game against WMU. So he had the pleasure of beating WMU twice that season.

Edit: seems to be everywhere so I echo Floyd’s “woah”

He's lucky he is still the head coach at ND. Given the standards ND has for itself, I'm not sure how he survived 8 wins in years 1 and 2, vacating 12 and 9 wins in years 3 and 4, and only 4 wins in year 5. Since then he has won 10+ games in each season, but I swear nobody really notices. Although not his fault, and probably because they won't join a conference, it doesn't seem like ND captures anybody's attention the way it used to.

ND has been in the CFP 2 of the last 3 seasons.

We are aware Nigel. Yet this kind of run from ND in the 1990s or even early 2000s - 54 wins in five years - would have dominated college football headlines and our conversations. It feels like even with all the recent winning, the media and CFB fans are less interested in ND than compared to years past.

Odd that you didn't mention it in your post. Not sure what "we" you're referring to.

But, you did make a point to say he was lucky to still be the coach there...as if you kinda forgot ND made 2/3 CFPs.

I thought it was clear that I said Kelly was lucky to survive his first few years, which included some 8 win seasons, two seasons of vacated wins, and a 4-8 season. I really thought he was going to get fired after going 4-8 in 2016, and those previous 8 win seasons were not considered all that successful by ND standards. I then said he has won over 50 games in the last few years. So his recent success was clearly documented.

Now I see why you said I was hand-wringing on Thanksgiving. I was engaged in a conversation where rational people disagreed in a very reasonable way. That was probably very unfamiliar to you and something difficult for you to process.

Have a good night, Nigel.

Watch the dominoes fall and contracts inflate.

A week ago I agreed with Brady Quinn who said in 2 years CMT’s contract wouldn’t be unique.  It took less than two weeks for PAC12 and SEC jobs to surpass Tucker’s.

PS

Matt Campbell to ND. Cincinnati going to Big 12 and the probable expanded playoffs makes it much easier for Fickell to stay in Cincinnati.

Few have mentioned that the NFL is going to be a completely different pay track because there are going to be more than a half dozen college coaches making more than most NFL HC’s.

I read this morning that Saban has a clause that he gets paid the higher of the average of the top 3 SEC coaches or the top 5 coaches in the country- so he’s going to be due a raise if true

On the one hand, this is crazy. On the other hand, the way that pro athlete salaries have skyrocketed, is it? Some 150+ NFL players make more than Belichick. More than 100 make more than Kelly will. Obviously Kelly is college, but the point remains that salaries are crazy, and in that context, it feels like coaches are underpaid relative to pro athletes.

It's funny how whenever the pay the players argument comes up you hear about how there won't be any money for womens sports. How come when it comes to over paying some meathead coach we don't hear the same?

I remember back in the days of the late great Drew Sharp (RIP) he used to write an oped about how the SEC was superior and Big Ten fans would absolutely lose their shit. All he had to do was tell the truth. When it comes to recruiting, cheating, stealing coaches and managing a team roster they've always been three steps ahead of the northern schools that take pride in 'doing it the right way'.

MY ND friend is already running with the line 'the academic standards are too high at ND for Kelly to win there' to which my reply is if your school is too stupid to not drop their grades for football that's on you. SEC the greatest conference for a reason.

Why that would devalue the name of an institution with a mural unironically called “Touchdown Jesus.”
