The U.S does indeed produce enough oil to meet its own needs. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), in 2020 America produced 18.4 million barrels of oil per day and consumed 18.12 million.

It’s 100% profit taking. But if you can’t get this message across to the voting public, it’s not a win.

Most of the public see it as price gouging, even the Republicians.

Gas has dropped another 10 cents this week

A weird thing has happened in the last couple of weeks. Typically, Costco gas has always been, at most, about 10-20 cents cheaper than the gas stations by my house. In the the last 3-4 weeks, that difference has been closer to 40 cents. And the stations by my house are a good 5-10 cents cheaper than most places within a 5 mile radius. Either Costco worked out a new deal with their distributors, or the regular stations are taking advantage, thinking that it's already down from earlier in the summer, so why go lower.

I paid $3.299 in Alma yesterday, and that was at a Speedway. My mpg was showing 32.8 so it's back to about ten cents per mile in fuel costs for me.

Gas prices during most of the Trump.administration were low due to the oil industry investing too much in new oil wells in the US during the Obama administration. The refining industry also had consolidated in the US somewhat, though there is still more refining capacity than demand in the US and the excess gasoline is shipped out of the country.

Gas prices had been rising back to a level that was highly profitable before the war shock. This was because the Saudi's had taken a major amount of pil off the market in 2020.

Now with demand distruction prices are falling.

All in all pump prices were too low before and during the pandemic due to over supply. They were too high at the pump with the Biden recovery in 2021 due to under supply.

They are drifting back to a price that is fairer to both producers and consumers, a wag for price is $2.50 to $3.50

That is similar to what we have going on where I live but it isn't just Costco. The same company/brand might even have 20 cent difference with two of their own stations a mile apart.

The Costco I frequent gas prices have consistently been 30 to 40 cents BELOW what is posted at Meijer and 35-45 cents BELOW major brands for weeks.

Gas up at least .30/gallon this week. Drove by my local Speedway and the posted price was $4.49!
