I'm also a proud graduate from Michigan State University but that doesn't mean that other folks can't choose to attend the institution of higher education that best fits their needs.
see how that works?? It's pretty amazing when you live a life making your own decisions and not letting things like religion, politics, etc., dictate your happiness.

You think Mazda makes Subaru's?
TM was correct in his assessment of your automotive knowledge!
Although I did buy a Mazda 626 years ago when they were made by union workers in my home state of Michigan

So I mixed that up, it happens when one really doesn't care that much about whom one is posting to.
Subaru is unionized, however

Me too.
I have always wondered why "buying local" applies to kale and beer but not cars. I have always owned cars that are made by our local car companies. Most liberals, while spouting support for unions, can't seem to bring themselves to actually buy a union made car. From the looks of things Subaru is the current official car of the left.
I'm of the left and I drive a GM car. But if you want to be a good local buyer, you need to make sure your big 3 car is assembled in Michigan too. So much is mostly built in Mexico/Canada or even south Korea these days. Usually the cheaper SUVs meant to compete with the foreign imports ( I think, terrain and maybe equinox?, Chevy Trax, encore, etc)

OEMs fabricate the major sheet metal & likely, but not always, engines. Transmissions, axils, suspension parts, gas tanks, brakes, tires, wheels, electronics, all the interior components including seats and everything on them are typically outsourced.
With so much of the vehicle outsourced it is hard to know how much is made where.

Well, there used to be NAFTA rules that dictated how much of a car had to originate within the US to be considered something, i don't recall the details, perhaps considered "made in USA". IIRC it was like 70% or something. So a lot of OEMs actively sought to source parts from united states even if it wasn't cheapest. It was a good move to support US interests because you're always going to be able to find any given part much cheaper in china. I'm constantly dealing with this professionally being compared against chinese goods from auto tier buyers. I really don't give a fuck though, you want a cheap chinese part go get a cheap chinese part. You'll probably be dealing with recalls at some point then. Take it or leave it.
I don't know what the rules are now though with the NAFTA replacement. I don't really care though, engineers are lazy, you drop something in their lap quickly that solves their problem and they are usually going with your part without too much consideration on the price. So speed is always key

That plant has about a 300k per year limit and doesn't build every model.
Subaru sold over 600k vehicles in the US in 2023, and its plants in Japan are unionized.
They probably use that plant geographically, with cars on the coasts being from Japan, but depending on which model Bob has...
Re: Elon Musk and Twitter
That's why after some recent successful UAW strikes and contract negotiations those Right to Work plants raised wages and changed work rules out of the goodness in their hearts.
I enjoy hearing from the anti-union folks who get 5 day work weeks, overtime and qualify for unemployment benefits if they are laid off, plants close or they are fired for a bs reason.
The other side of the coin is my late uncle who owned a non-union tool and die shop. He was a major supplier to Michigan based union appliance plant that also had their own tool and die tradesmen. He knew some of them and knew company mid-level and upper management.
How did he keep the union out? He paid $0.50 an hour more than the union shop, closed for major holidays, 1/2 day for Good Friday, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve. 1 week vacation after 6 months, 2 weeks after first year. The kicker was he'd close the shop after a 1/2 day on Nov 14 if it fell Monday thru Friday and they got Opening Day for deer season if it was on a work day. That was in 1948 until he sold it to the first engineer he hired in 1970.
That's how you keep your shop non-union.
PS
He was born on a farm in Northern Kent County, learned tool and die as an apprentice, was a shop supervisor for a shop down south during WW2 and mortgaged the family farm to buy his shop after the war. He was a multi-millionaire when he died.

Firing workers who try to start a union is just the first step.
Re: Elon Musk and Twitter
All those right to work trades have run out of employees to poach and were too cheap to have actual training. Now union trades have opened training sites in West MI and the owners of plumbing, HVAC and electrical shops are crying because the county and community colleges need to expand because they aren't producing enough grads.

Competition heating up for Tesla both in China & the US.
edit - an interesting note about how Tesla is making money...
The Austin, Texas, company said Tuesday that it made $1.48 billion from April through June, less than the $2.7 billion it made in the same period of 2023. It was Tesla’s second-straight quarterly net income decline.
...
During the quarter, Tesla’s revenue from regulatory credits purchased by other automakers who can’t meet government emissions targets hit $890 million for the quarter, double Tesla’s amount of most previous quarters.
$1.48 Billion minus $0.89 Billion equals $0.59 billion, or 60% of Tesla's earnings are due to the US government regulations.

poor kid - I hope they have access to a supportive network of friends and family. I suspect their sad excuse of a 'father' could've used that same kind of love.

The committee has been acquiring detailed voter information from those living in Michigan and other battleground states after people submit their personal data through a section on the PAC’s website that says “register to vote.”
After clicking on the “register to vote” tab on America PAC’s website, users in states like Michigan can submit a ZIP code, address and phone number. People with a Michigan address are brought to a page that says “thank you” and asks users to “complete the form below” to help wrap up the voter registration process. As of Sunday afternoon, though, there was no other form to complete below the words “thank you.”
