It has been going on in modern times since Glenn started coaching there, of course when they won all those NC's back in the day, they were paying professionals to play against high school teams and were kicked out of the Western Conference for doing so.

It's going to take a state, or perhaps even federal, crime for anything to be done about. Not unlike how it took the Feds to get them in trouble for the basketball cheating in the 90s. Local jurisdiction and they can get away with anything.

Didn't the Feds get into it due to gambling?

Yup. And not even about UM. UM only came up because it was how Ed was using/hiding his money.
They won't outwardly commit a Federal crime, it will need to be something where the Feds get involved for something else that ends up tied to UM.

There was a bunch of talk about the unforced turn over by Webber in the title game with the game on the line.

I think his lawyer released that. Court hearing is on January 5th. Win for the lawyer. Pretty sure the prosecutor was trying to play hard ball with that one case.

Which is why I expect him to hit the portal. Out of tB1G = no suspension.

The totally situation leads to FUCK the B1G...
It was a situation which was a carry-over from the end of the game where UofM players were in MSU players faces pushing them, (probably more) on the field. If it had happened where people could see what happened, it would have been a nothing burger.
The length of the suspensions was & is ridiculous, and it is more ridiculous that it is one sided.
The fine is probably the absolute fucking worst. UofM has constant issues for years with control in the UofM tunnel, and MSU is fined the biggest fine ever because of it. Fuck off B1G.

I wonder how much pressure his attorney put on the prosecutor.
Like...you want to charge him with a felony and go to court...OK...we're going to call the UM player, his dad, UM Coaches, and medical staff about the "broken" nose and "concussion". And we're going to call Harbaugh and Warde to testify about the tunnel.
The 8 game suspension (or essentially a whole year) needs to be appealed. Maybe it has already (might be better handled without the media finding out).

Kind of sad that the heat the prosecutor was facing lasted all of a few days and now everybody has forgotten about how he reduced the judicial system to his favorite sports teams.

I'm guessing the attorney did a thorough review of all college bar fights in Washtenaw County to see what people were charged with also.

What he did for Smith, the delay until the season was over, was somewhat dirty, but it was really the AAPD not putting Smith in jail overnight that gave him the "out", which is more of a conspiracy by A2 law enforcement / DoJ to protect UofM sports at several levels, and not just him directly.
The plea down is a nice deal for Smith, but not out of line with what happens fairly often.
That Smith faces no discipline from UofM administratively as a student, or UofM football is foolishness, but they are what they are, a dirty renegade program.

Like I said, the number of games was chosen, as a favor to Michigan. I’m telling you guys in Michigan wants nothing to do with any of those guys that were harassed and suspended because of Harbaugh‘s big mouth after that game. I guarantee you we do not know even 1/50th S of the shit those guys have taken from social media and personal emails from uofm fans. However, I bet the Big Ten knows, and they don’t want that kid taking out his frustration on Michigan because I really believe next year’s game is going to be a bloodbath.

Also is it 8 games or 8 big ten games? I’m not sure how the big ten can enforce a suspension when we play a non big ten game

Agree, it is a full season suspension, just happens to cover next year's game.
All the suspensions are way overkill and basically, like the $100k fine which should have been on UofM, ridicules for a post-game shoving match.

No, it is all about branding MSU's program. UofM would love MSU to leave the B1G (they think) and the B1G sees MSU as superfluous as a market builder with UofM in the same state.
MSU would be a tremendous addition to the SEC marketing wise being in the middle of B1G country, and for MSU football, it would open up what Tucker is already trying to do recruiting wise.

That is a terrible terrible hot take. On multiple fronts.
I thought so too, when I first heard it suggested, but looking deeper it is not as crazy as it seems.
First, it must be said, that MSU would remain part of the academic network which includes the B1G, so all arguments about that are moot.
Talking about the athletics only.
From MSU's point what athletics would be an issue? Probably ice hockey, however MSU could join a different hockey conference without much trouble and still be in a top conference.
Ss for football & basketball (men & woman), baseball, softball and most other sports it would just be a different set of teams to play and travel times would not be all that much different.
What about the money?
Well, the SEC & the B1G are in a struggle to dominate major college sports. Right now, the B1G is gaining on the SEC, but the SEC is no slouch as a major sports league. It is really the TV networks who are fighting this out. The B1G has spread over to the east coast and soon the west coast, which the SEC has the southern markets. From the SEC's POV they need some teams in the B1G areas for marketing and ad dollars. Of course, the big prize would be Notre Bame, but that isn't happening.
MSU is a well-known school with a history, a top men's basketball program and sits near the Chicago / Detroit, and other upper Mid-west population centers. It would be worthwhile foe the SEC to outbid the B1G to gain a school in this market.
So, what would be MSU's motivation. Well money, first of all, as this only makes sense for MSU for more money. Next, for football it opens up a huge football mad recruiting area, a plus with MSU's newfound commitment for national recruiting. It also helps the SEC schools with recruiting the mid-west. Furthermore, it would increase MSU's standing within Michigan, cutting the ties with the B1G which make MSU somewhat a "me too" University to UofM within its academic recruiting (students) market.
Those are some of hte more interesting "pluses", other than emotional attachments what do people see as the negatives?
