Everytime Tugger announced a new assistant, I had to convince myself that it would be a good move. Every time Smith announces a new assistant, I have to convince myself to be cautious in my optimism. We are absolutely loading up.

I'll always be grateful to Harlon for everything he has done for the program - as a player, as an assistant, and the miracles he worked holding the team together last season. Seeing him go, while completely understandable, broke my heart. If we have to lose him, though, this feels like a very, very good move.

Michigan State punter named Freshman All-American
Taylor also broke the NCAA record for punting yards in a season set by Michigan State’s Johnny Pingel in 1938.

That 1938 team was a bit of a disappointment on the heels of a spectacular '37 season and a trip to the Orange Bowl.

Don't get GreenWay started. He is always complaining about how that team ruined his first football season as a retiree.

I often stay up late into the night, thinking about what might have been with the 38 team.

Honestly? If he can get us to a bowl game - even a bad one - I'll be absolutely thrilled. Anything over 6-6 would just be a bonus.

Mabe I am misreading this, but OSU was 8-4 last year.

Next year maybe MSU will beat lower level teams at least?

MSU didn't get much for their money last time around...
That means the Spartans will have three assistant coaches making at least $1 million in 2024, which isn’t far off the previous staff. Former coach Mel Tucker had a trio of assistants who did so in 2023 after receiving extensions and raises following an 11-2 season in 2021. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson ($1.35 million), defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Scottie Hazelton ($1.1 million) and offensive line coach and run game coordinator Chris Kapilovic ($1 million) all brought in seven figures last season in base salary and none were retained after Tucker was fired in September and replaced by Smith.

Correct me if I;m wrong, but I thought the highest paid assistant under the last regime was pulling in $800k. And that Mel kept the bonus that was allocated for the assistants for himself.

yep, 8-4 with a loss to ND in the Sun Bowl (I believe) - without their head coach and quite a few players who opted out, hit the portal, etc.Trapper Gus wrote:8 - 5 including the bowl game, which was not coached by Smith, so yes 8 - 4

Huh. Wild. Alright, nevermind then. I thought I remembered reading about Mel keeping bonuses earmarked for assistants at one point, but I must have either been hearing bullshit, or I dreamed it. Wouldn't be the first time for either.

Doesn't exactly incentivize your staff to "try harder", and at $9 million/year do you really need that extra 100k tugger?
