It’s like you’re asking when people stopped using the word rad. There isn’t a moment, it’s an organic thing that developed over time.

We were coming back to Manistee in 1979 on a school bus from Cheboygan. It was dark and cold and most of us were sleeping. My buddy Mike tapped me on the shoulder and said, “hey wags I think I invented the word crash to mean that you’re gonna sleep”. Thing is, I’m pretty sure he was serious. Last I heard he was a mailman in TC.
So I don’t think he got royalties from doing it.

This is not helpful Travis. Maybe help me out with when the movement started. Like, who was the first guy to ever call Detroit the D? I think the first time I ever heard it was Jim Rome.

Re: 2024 NFL Draft In the D
As a longtime suburbanite, 'the D' has been a common term for Detroit for as long as I can remember (pre-Rome). "Heading down to the D". "You going down to the D tomorrow night?". Pretty common phrase. I don't use "the big D", but I have heard my parents say it.

The city of Detroit has been proudly represented by the D since at least the early 1900s, when the city’s baseball team, the Detroit Tiger, emblazoned D, in a blackletter typeface, on their uniforms. The D became a rallying symbol for the city in following crippling race riots in the city the previous year. Detroit residents have gone on to hail their city as The (Big) D.

Now this is helpful Nordic. I know everyone has always loved the iconic old english D but to me it was always about the baseball team. Moving to metro Detroit in 1969 and living in Michigan ever since I swear I never heard the actual city referred to as the D until about 30 years ago and certainly not with the frequency it is now. And Big D is Dallas.

I keep waiting for the Chargers to announce a blockbuster trade where they send Justin Herbert to the Bears, Commanders, Patriots or Cardinals so they can move up and get JJ McCarthy who Jim Harbaugh says is “The best QB in the draft”

The first time I heard of Dallas being the Big D was in the Hunt for Red October and Dallas was the submarine.

So no one has brought up the new freeway sign yet?
Mayor Duggan blames disappointment over Detroit’s new I-94 sign on expectations set by unofficial Instagram post
Sorry to tell the mayor (he probably reads this site) that the disappointment is more likely the result of a poor idea. For one thing, the sign isn't Honolulu blue. For another thing, it's dumb.

IIRC that golden hole cost like $2.5 million, a lot more than the Detroit sign. It didn't deliver the bang for the buck.

Upon further ANALysis, they really gas-lit us about how great it would be. Turned out it was a big stinker.

Re: 2024 NFL Draft In the D
Figured I’d drop this article here even though it’s for the 2025
NFL Draft.
Colorado coach Sanders says he will only let his son and Travis Hunter play in the NFL for any of the following six teams: Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington, Baltimore, or Philly. Prime Time made it clear he doesn’t want either player drafted by any teams in cold weather cities, and he suggests both players may take the same route as Eli Manning and John Elway.
Seems weird to me that Sanders has that much control over Hunter, and apparently Deion isn’t aware of those things called indoor stadiums.

Saw a mock with the Vikings trading up to (the Falcons) #8 to draft McCarthy (and giving up the #11 pick, and 2 4th rounders this year). I don't think the Giants take him at 6. If they don't, maybe the Broncos or Raiders also get interested.

Mock Draft Update: TRADE
15. DETROIT LIONS (VIA COLTS): CB QUINYON MITCHELL, TOLEDO
Mock Trade: Lions receive Pick Nos. 15 and 117; Colts receive Pick Nos. 29 and 61 and a 2025 third-round pick
The Lions are clearly in “win now” mode and make a move here by trading up for PFF's 10th-ranked player in the draft class. Over the past two seasons, Mitchell surrendered just 56 receptions on 140 targets into his coverage with eight interceptions and 36 forced incompletions.

Re: 2024 NFL Draft In the D
I actually like their 3rd round pick. Rice is damn good. Not overly fast or athletic and obv not the freak his dad was, but the kid catches everything and knows how play football.
Edit: I didn't read their commentary before posting the above. It is spot on.
73. DETROIT LIONS (VIA VIKINGS): WR BRENDEN RICE, USC
Brad Holmes' search for a legitimate X receiver is finally over with the selection of Jerry Rice's son here. For a player of his size, Rice is a technical route runner while also offering upside as a blocker. He made big improvements in reliability in 2023, dropping just two balls all season.

The athletic guy has them taking Keon Coleman in the second. That’d be cool. I mentioned earlier in the thread I think but they don’t need a fast dude. We have fast dudes. They need a big tall fucker that you can run into the corner of the end zone on 3rd down from the 4 and you can throw it up to em and they can go get it. The offense became a bit one dimensional inside the 5 and led to a few too many field goals that should have been touchdowns.

Re: 2024 NFL Draft In the D
Still not buying that the Giants will draft McCarthy. They should just stick at 6 and hope the Vikings get up to 3, 4, or 5...so the Giants can get a legit player.
After 3, Harrison, the LSU WR, the Washington WR, the ND OT, and even the Georgia TE are Day 1 special players.
Chargers might end up swindling the Vikings for 2 first rounders and a 1st next year.
