Re: The Golf Thread
Went golfing again last night. I have the golf bug.
I get off the tee well and can advance the ball pretty well. For 450 yard hole I'm within reasonable distance of the cup in 2 shots most of the time. On a really good day I'll reach the green in two at that distance. The 110 yrd to the cup zone is the real challenge of golf for me. Even landing on the green from 25-50 yards out is friggin hard. So easy to get too much power on the ball or not enough. What a sickness this game is.

Re: The Golf Thread
I think it's worth posting about the Rocket Mortgage Classic here, the PGA Tourney that made its inaugural debut this past weekend at Detroit Golf Club. I did not make it out but I watched a bit and followed along. The layout looked flat and relatively easy, the field wasn't the greatest and half of the top guys like DJ and Bubba and Woodland did not make the weekend cut. But the course looked great, Detroit looked great, the crowds were lively as hell and it looked like Detroit put on a pretty good show. I even saw the lights of the Good Year blimp (and it read Bill Cain's a Pimp).
The story of the guy who won the thing is pretty unbelievable. If you are not aware, recommended reading. It was quite emotional.

Ricky Fowler gushed about the event at every turn, but he sort of has to.
I worried about the course because it's flat. Not that I've ever golfed there, but since it's in Detroit you can guess it's, well, very flat. I get why they're having it there, being the only course in the city that might present at least some challenge and have the amenities. I mean, it's not like their going to play Chandler Park. Still, I've always thought that playing a regular tournament at one of the northern MI courses would be awesome because the terrain, but that wouldn't fit Gilbert's objective.

I think the other issue with northern courses, is 2 fold. Distance from an airport and getting the fans there. You would think they could do something around Traverse, but maybe the infrastructure isn't there.Floyd Robertson wrote:Ricky Fowler gushed about the event at every turn, but he sort of has to.

I also don't know how some of those courses would set up for a tournament either. Like I don't think walking Arcadia Bluffs is even an option.

I was told Crystal Downs is the most U.S. open ready course in Michigan right now.

OK, I get it about the Detroit directive. That said, I was there Saturday and Sunday. We parked on the Fair Grounds and there were buses after buses taking spectators to the club.
Four trips on the bus there and back during two days I waited about 15 minutes total. The transportation was incredible.
The course is wide open with wide fairways and large greens. It is flat.
The greens are the story. On a par four you can get there in two, but good luck with your third shot, then putt.
I was in the Lending Tree Lounge both days, 20 feet behind the 16th green and there were propably 4-5 birdies each day, even though the approach shots were close. The greens were big and had tons of peaks, valleys and slopes.
The really impressive aspect were the temporary structures (grand stands, sky boxes with AC, stadium seating etc... I road the shuttle with a CBS camera dude and he said it took 2 months to put all that together.

FYI...
Most pro golfers can reach Par 4s in two shots.

How is your game coming along InTen? I kind of hate golf currently. It's a love hate relationship but maybe more like a I like golf league/don't really like golf relationship. I don't think golf is ever gonna be a thing for me. I went through a little period a few years ago where we tried to play all the best courses in MI. I guess that was cool.

Re: The Golf Thread
I think I fucked up my shoulder a few months ago. My game isn't great, I doubt it will be. If I could consistently get off the tee box, I'd be better. My drive is broken, I mainly use a 3 wood off the tee. My irons are ok, I'm comfortable between 175 and 125. 100-120 I hate. 80-95 I'm ok. Anything between 60&20 yards I should just add 3 strokes.
For some reason my play out of traps next to the green is great. I don't play often in the summer, so fucking hot. I'll see how things go this fall.

Re: The Golf Thread
I’m kind of hating golf these days as well. If I have a slow group in front of me it completely fucks up my game. I had an outing where i was +1 by the fourth hole then I caught up to some league and I couldn’t even hit the ball. Also, my driver is completely fucked and I put this spin on it that is killing my distance. Also, just about every round I have a hole where everything goes to shit hit a ball in the woods with the driver, hit a worm burner, blade a chip and miss a two foot put. Then there are holes where I bomb the driver, land the green and sink the put. Very Jekyll and Hyde sport for me.

Thinking about upgrading my golf bag a bit.
Hybrid clubs. Anyone have these? Thinking I might give my 3 and 4 iron the boot.
Putter, I have a really old putter. Any recommends? I've seen some really expensive ones as well...Edel putters look interesting.
Last thinking about upgrading all my drivers 3, 5 and driver. Been looking at last years Callaway rogue epics.

I carry a Driver, 3 wood, and hybrid. I haven’t hit my 3 wood in years. To me it really makes no sense to carry one. How often are you in the yardage window to the green that it makes sense? Rarely ever. In my mind placement is more important than distance from the fairway. I could definitely see using one off the tee if your not accurate with the driver. I pretty accurate off the tee so that’s also another reason my collects dust. Long irons are my shit. Not to get all romantic about it but to me there’s nothing more pure in golf than a well struck long iron. Anywho....putting is largely confidence and green reading ability. There isn’t any variation of a putter that makes an ounce of difference to me. It’s flat edge meets ball. Nothing more. Buy what looks and feels good to you even if it’s cheap.

I definitely use my 5 wood more than I use my three wood. I use the five wood all the time on Par 5's and long par 4's. I don't hit my low irons too well. In fact off the fairway not sure I hit my 3 much further than my 5 for some reason. Might be an issue with my swing. This guy at work was telling me that most golfers use the hybrid for anything lower than a 6. I love my five iron especially off the tee for holes about 170-180 yards. Thinking I'll get a 3 iron equivalent for a hybrid
Regarding putters, I tried an Odyssey at Dick's sporting goods and liked the newer, more modern bigger grip and the putter had more weight to it. I was able to hit 10 footers with it but maybe their demo green is just very forgiving.

I went golfing today. Started out hot then tell apart. Had fun and I wasn't at the office though. Checked out completely, let my daughter kill the battery on my phone.
Putting is confidence, but the type of putter does matter. I prefer a bladed putter, I've tried others, but ultimately don't like the other variations.
I have the Callaway rogue irons. I like them, but I almost hit too far. I hit the 7 around 170, the 8 about 160-165, the 9 about 145-150 and the pw about 135 or so. I'm fucked from 50-110 yards.

I read that Callaway has lower loft so a 6 iron is close to a 5 iron. I tried some of their irons and really liked them. I got out my putting mat and did some work tonight. Going to keep my putter but probably just add a bigger grip to it.

Played on Monday and today. After 13 years, I think I'd be used to the shitty Florida fairways, but no.
Course I played today knows they can have slow play and want it to be fun. Not the greatest course in the world, shouldn't have even been that difficult.
The rangers go around with shots of rum if you want it. Who gives away free shots? This place does. Palm Beach National. Sounds fancy, pretty white trashy. Lots of retiree's. Not too much diversity either. Fun course though if you're in teh area.
Playing trump Doral, Blue Monster the Monday after Superbowl. Could be extremely slow, apparently donny boy might be there, so the place will be crawling with Secret Service.

Re: The Golf Thread
Crazy thing happened today on the golf course. Witnessed the 2nd hole in one on the SAME hole within 7 months. Jingles made an ace on number two at Eagle Eye in October and the very next time I played it ( today) another buddy made a hole in one. Unreal.
It's the 13th hole in one I have witnessed. 7 of them are mine.
