Why did the NFL send the Lions to London if they are trying to attract fans over there?

Megatron had trade value a few years ago but not so much anymore. When RBs or WRs start to decline they go down in a hurry. CJ had s couple more decent years left that's it. I don't see anyone taking on his massive contract.

Nice to see Stafford roll out of the pocket...only way he's gonna survive the rest of this season.

They ought to trade anyone on the team for anything they can get with the possible exception of Ziggy. Everyone else is replaceable with a street free agent.

The weirdest part about this game is how much focus is on the crowd. It wouldn't surprise me if the NFL handed out jerseys to people.

After today's wretched performance there is no reason to retain Martin Mayhew and the only reason to keep Caldwell through the end of the season is he's gonna to get paid anyway.
With Caldwell it's like a kid being toilet trained. Let him sit in the shitty mess he helped create.

Didn't see any of it but heard one of the worst rushing teams in the league went off for 200+ with their starting RB on the sidelines.
Vaguely reminiscent of the game against the Chiefs (1990?) when little-known Barry Word put up 200 while Christian Okoye was sidelined. The more things change the more they remain the same. Russ Thomas, Matt Millen, Mayhwew, it don't matter.

Kansas City's rushing offense is decent. Jamaal Charles, the guy that is out for the season was one of the best RB's in the league. His backup is serviceable.

Re: The 2015/16 Detroit Lions thread
I forgot when the Lion's game started and when I tuned in and saw the 27-3 score I thought it was a final. It was at the half.
I may be in the minority about hoping Willian Clay Ford's widow cleans house as opposed to those who think selling the team is the only solution. If you like Detroit and like Detroit having an NFL franchise don't think the next owner moving the team is impossible.

Re: The 2015/16 Detroit Lions thread
Column: The fall of Lions GM Martin Mayhew and others feels inevitable
LONDON — I wonder what Martin Mayhew is thinking right now.
The Lions general manager met with a couple reporters and the team's website on Friday morning in a little alcove at The Grove, a luxury resort that served as Detroit's European training base last week.
There was coffee and tea. There was a fruit plate. It was pleasant.
But Mayhew walked into the room with a purpose: To convince everyone that Detroit could still win this season. But there really is no convincing to be done, is there? Does anyone really believe Mayhew? That the Lions could make the playoffs? When no other team, ever, has been able to do it after a start as bad as this?
Mayhew should know this as well as anyone. He built this mess, after all.

Re: The 2015/16 Detroit Lions thread
Wojo: Only a matter of time for Mayhew, Caldwell
It got worse, much worse. It almost always gets worse.
The Lions are a punch line and a punching bag again, and the next move has to be the big one. Jim Caldwell and Martin Mayhew should not survive this disaster, with the Lions 1-7 after soiling a football field on another continent, losing to the Chiefs, 45-10, Sunday in London.
If you fire one, you have to fire the other, so the only issue should be the timing. Caldwell could be dismissed immediately, with the Lions heading into a bye, and replaced by defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. I’d do the complete front-office purge at the end of the season, because right now you have no idea who would lead the search for a new regime. Any firing makes a strong case for accountability, but it has to be part of a real plan.
That’s where we enter the great unknown. Martha Ford, who made the trip to London, is in charge and presumably angry, although she rarely talks to the media. Just canning another coach isn’t the entire answer. Nothing truly changes until something substantive changes at the top. It’s a tired lament, I know, and there’s no sign Ford, 90, is interested in selling the team she’s controlled since her husband’s passing 20 months ago.

Re: The 2015/16 Detroit Lions thread
Lions to do list
1. Fire Tom Lewand, Martin Mayhew, Jim Caldwell, the entire front office and coaching staffs.
2. Hire somebody like Kevin Colbert (Steelers GM) to be Team President.
3. Have him hire a GM and coach. The GM should be hired quickly and then the President and GM can find a coach.
4. Cut Stafford. His cap number is obscene and that makes him untradeable and he is not worth it.
5. Redo Megatron's deal - his cap number sucks but he can still contribute.
6. Don't take a quarterback in the first round - take linemen. You're gonna suck so build for the future.
7. Do not bother re-signing your own free agents - trust me they suck.

Re: The 2015/16 Detroit Lions thread
2. Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford
So far: one win (eight games)
On pace: two wins
Comment: Wins and losses really aren't a quarterback statistic, and Stafford is hardly the only person to blame for the Lions' 1-7 record. But that start has put Stafford on pace to finish the season in rare and inglorious company. If the Lions finish 2-14, their overall record in games he has started would be 37-56. At that point, there would be only one player in NFL history -- Archie Manning -- who had made as many as 93 starts and won 37 or fewer of them. The bumbling Lions of the Stafford Era would be second only to Manning's 'Aints. Ouch.
These guys are on pace for best and worst seasons

Re: The 2015/16 Detroit Lions thread
The lack of responses shows how far the Lions have fallen into irrelevance among this board's users.
Naming this guy just tells me Sheila Hamp and her mother don't and haven't trusted Lewan's numbers. Naming Ron Wood was a surprise but he's a trusted Ford money guy. As of September '15, Forbes listed the Detroit Lions value at $900M,28th of the 32 NFL teams and the only NFL team to lose money ($3.2M) in '14. Not beyond the realm of possibility the 3 Ford daughters of Martha Ford might want to cash out of the NFL and sell while franchises are are still a hot property so they appoint Wood as team president to get the team's financial house in order and ascertain a selling price.
I heard Ron Wood and thought of the Rolling Stones.

Re: The 2015/16 Detroit Lions thread
Got to believe every talking head in Detroit will be covering this like its Ford Motor shutting down. But they have zero skin in the game.
At the end of the day I think a lot of what's going on now has to do with Bill Ford Jr strong support of hiring Alan Mulally to be Ford Motor president and in his first year Mulally got rid of a number of Ford VP's. One of which was 27 year Ford Veteran Steven Hamp, Sheila Ford Hamp's husband. Its being reported Shelia has her mother's ear.
Several other reports say once Bill Jr learned the Lions would become the property of all 4 of Wm Clay and Martha's children when she passes he walked and is helping run Ford Motor.
Will not surprise me if the Ford siblings have their financial guy in place to get the franchise's house in order and they sell within 36 months of Martha's death. The 3 sisters might give Bill Jr the chance to buy them out otherwise they'll all be splitting about $1B or more.
