There are very few network show that I detest, and they all fall in the faux scripted reality genre. Survivor, Batchelor/ette etc are all a pox on society and I weep for this country that they are so popular.

My wife's favorite show is Amazing Race. Survivor is a close second. She actually asked me if I wanted to try out for AR. I declined, but said I'd be happy to go all the places they go and do all the things they do, but without the stress of a competition. The only stress I'm willing to deal with when I'm traveling is if my luggage shows up late.

I don't think Survivor is scripted. I've watched a bit of is the Amazing Race but I've never made it through a full season.

Is Jim Rice in this newest reboot? I would think I would have heard about it if he was.

Also is Whitney Duncan in it? Survivor - Page 2 1f60d

If the answer to either is yes, I might watch.

What gives me pause on Survivor, as opposed to big brother, is the cameras. Two people go for a walk to talk strategy and a camera follows them..what do the other people in the tribe think about that?

Of course there's down time off-camera on BB too, but there's so much more of it on survivor

If there weren't cameras, and two people went off to talk among themselves, people would still notice. I think there are several camera guys, as well as producers, around the camp all the time, and they're always following people whether they go get water, take a shit, etc. I'm sure there are things that they re-shoot, or encourage people to discuss, but the competitions look pretty legit.

It's not 100% must watch for me, but my wife and daughter usually watch it, and I don't mind watching if I'm not doing anything else. I like the competitions. I always loved the obstacle course on Battle of the Network Stars when I was a kid, too. I like Amazing Race better, however, because it's faster paced, and more of a pure competition, in that if you suck at the competitions, your social game isn't going to keep you racing.

Okay, I admit it, I watch the show. The fact that the reality shows cost much less to produce & often generate decent to solid ratings has made them a staple of network & cable television. Survivor was the first and still one of the best.

Survivor and American Idol, The Voice, The Bachelor and are all shows that offices I call on talk or talked about for days after each episode.

Doug nailed the production cost factor and they are popular but no one in our family of 4 ever was interested. We watched Deadliest Catch but sports and other shows.

I don't knock it. Just never appealled to me but sure has for millions for years. To keep the show going without going way off the concept is great producing and casting.

The theory is we can always get Sandra next vote and then boom she wins twice. Guys on that show are stupid to vote out any other guy. The women control so much while being physically worthless with their social games

True and true.

Zeke could bail him out - the two of them doing a traveling speech/show would probably be a decent draw.

I really think I am too old to understand all this stuff....

Zeke is born a woman.
Comes out as gay when 15.
Somewhere after that changes gender from woman to man.
Spent his season on Survivor telling people he was a gay male.
Is now in a torrid affair with Hannah, a woman from his season of Survivor.
Varner somehow did him an incredible dirty by revealing he is transgendered.

I guess somehow I don't get how that's awful.

And wouldn't Lesbian be a better fit for him than gay male?

I'm sincerely confused by all this.

First off, it was a dick move to say what he did. I'm shocked he did. WTF could he possibly gain? I think he had a shot of swaying people until he said that.

I don't believe Zeke told him. Earlier in the episode he mentioned 'I think there is more going on' with Zeke than just an alliance with Ozzy. Zeke also said he had not told anyone. Sounds like Varner may have had work connections with LGBT community and just picked up on it.

Could be. But keep in mind none of Milennials had aired yet when this group left to film. So it could have worked it's way through either the Survivor grapevine or through some sort of LGTB grapevine in North Carolina.

I don't know if any of you has ever been to True Dork Times but they have the best wonkish stuff on survivor.

I've watched it a couple of times. My wife and one of my kids missed it the first go around. What Varner did was still despicable, but I get it more now. He is immeresed in the LGBT community and thinks differently than you or I that are not. So I (sort of) get where he was coming from. Still not right, but I get it more and I think he was generally remorseful after he realized what he had done. Zeke handled it unbelievably. In the end, they can both make this out to be a positive thing. And as father of two teenage(ish) daughters, it also provided me with quite a few teaching moments.
