What's the worst that can happen?

Lions win the division, go to the playoffs and Jim Caldwell coaches in '17, year 4 of his 4 year deal.

What do the Fords do then? Give Caldwell an extension through 2019?

If Caldwell is coming back, he'll likely come back with an extension already in his pocket. Players react differently to a coach they think is done, and the Lions' admin won't want the distraction of that question lingering throughout '17.
