Spartan writer?
The writer's parents were among my grandparents' very best friends. But I never met them. That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge about him.

Just want to say as a kid I found the ending of Frosty The Snowman when he's a melted puddle in the green house was pretty upsetting. His life ended so suddenly and you were forced to accept the loss.

Re: Best Christmas Movie?
I watched Planes, Trains and Automobiles before Thanksgiving and this thread has me thinking about Home Alone.
John Hughes has some common themes in his films - he touches upon being apart from families and the relief of reunification on a holiday. His main characters are successful and conventional but as the stories progress the characters exhibit compassion to someone living off the grid, lost a family member and suffering from loneliness and the pain of loss. In his art there's this interaction of middle class and the poor. His middle class characters always have a family and the lower class characters have experienced a tragedy/loss/abandonment.

Haha. Honestly this year Planes, Trains and Automobiles didn't give me as severe reaction as George but it's a bit heavy when he returns to find Del Griffith alone in that El Station.

John Hughes also directed Christmas Vacation and none of that dumb shit takes place. Lower class character (Cousin Eddie?) suffering loss - daughter in the clinic getting cured off the Wild Turkey??

Dumb shit? I didn't write the movies I'm just pointing it out.
The other common theme is dysfunctional family dynamics with a child feeling alienated from their parents. All of his films have the similar type of young character that finds their parents completely uncool and it's the source of their unhappiness. I think he explores the human condition, our relationships can bring great frustration, can be agonizing but we are a social creature and isolation can bring about it's own sets of challenges.

Re: Best Christmas Movie?
Classic favorite at our house is the 1984 Christmas Carol with George C Scott as Scrooge.
A Christmas Story because it is so 1950’s Midwest
Polar Express again because it’s s Midwest. The book and movie incorporate street scenes from author Van Allsburg’s EGR childhood neighborhood and a now torn down home that was behind the GR downtown YMCA.
Elf. Will Ferrell, James Caan. Pure silliness and joy.

Hatch doesn't like it because there is not enough guns and violence for a xmas movie.

All solid choices. Christmas Story and Elf are in my top 5. The Grinch (Jim Carrey version) is in there as well.

Don’t know why this wasn’t locked on the first page when I named Die Hard as the greatest Christmas movie ever. It has guns blood explosions boobs cocaine Christmas carols, kissing, twinkies football games, Roy Rogers.

Yeah, you are right Eddie's family is together. There really isn't the loner character like there was in the Home Alone or Planes Trains and Automobiles.
Class is definitely a part of the film though.

I saw it way back when it first came out, but I was thinking it took place in the UP? Or maybe was filmed there? I thought there was some connection around Munising.

Hey man. If you've never wanted to go drink by yourself at The Cheesecake Factory on Christmas Eve because your kids were driving you nuts, that's your problem not mine.

Looked it up. Set in the UP of Michigan, but filmed in Vancouver.

Wait why do I need murders in my Christmas movies? Step Brothers didn't have any murders.
Here is an underrated not very popular Christmas movie that I like. It's hokey but kind of funny. Trapped in Paradise.
