I've forgone buying a house and doing serious travel in order to get rid of my student loans. Call me bitter and selfish if you want but I'll be pretty annoyed if it all gets forgiven

I've never felt bad about living responsibly, yet not being in the group that could use some help. It sucks if you think about it, but ultimately you'll make decisions later on that will benefit you. Others might scam the system, but they're few and far between.

I worked my ass off to pay my way through college. Doubled down on 200K for my daughters. Paid that too. I’ve worked with kids who aren’t as lucky as me. I have no issue with forgiving them loans. It effects me not one bit. I worked I paid I got it done. So they got a break? I got one for 18 years with two great parents and later with a great wife. Life moves on. Don’t let it eat you up.

That said... I don't want to pay for someone else's 6months in Europe... because I could not afford it.

So should i hold off on paying my loans remaining? I’ve traveled instead of paying them off. @wake

I think the government should just give back the money that parents paid to any public university instead of burdening their kids with student loans. Problem solved and my retirement will be marginally better.

I don’t have the answer for student loan debt but there should be some way to make it more affordable. I paid mine off and am at the point where I don’t give a shit if others get theirs forgiven. The amount of debt today’s grads have is just absurd.

I do think guys like Wake who are doing the responsible thing should be rewarded somehow also.   I know their credit rating will be a reward for them, the habit he's created for himself will do him well his whole life, but there has to be some kind of tax break or some reward for guys like Wake too.  I don't really give a shit about me.  Had money ear marked, it's gone.  I'm old, I don't really need a shit ton more in my life.  But the kids who are doing the right thing also have to be rewarded somehow.

Also Wake's, I know you're aggressively paying down loans, and I am far from a financial advisor, but in your area, maybe buying a house and pulling back on paying off low interest student loans might be a good investment. Sure it suks having the loan debt, but renting is throwing money away. I don't know the area as far as appreciation of houses, and in the situation we're currently in I wonder how much prices will drop, but I'd consider it. Renting you have zero equity.

Yeah, I respect his frustration too. There really should be some innovation in education. They have all those code bootcamps, seems like there's other careers where you could do some kind of an immersive 'bootcamp' for less costs than a four year degree at a University and build up the necessary skills for a career. I think these things code boot camps cost around 15k and can land you a starting gig that pays around 80k. Would love to see something more along those lines to give people options.

I'm in favor of forgiveness, I'm just being grumpy.

As far as renting v. buying, gf and I have paid $800/month (total) to rent a decent house since I moved to SW Michigan. Had a leak in the roof last summer and the landlord came to fix it right away, no cost to us. The convenience is nice while I save for a 20% down payment. PMI is throwing money away; paying cheap rent for that kind of convenience is peace of mind.

One thing to consider and you'd have to weigh it out, but interest rates are so low right now that it might be worth the PMI. There's spreadsheets where you load in the interest, principal, monthly payments and all that shit to figure out the cost benefit analysis. I pay PMI just because houses are so friggin expensive out here and it works out to be about 40 dollars a month. In my situation it's worth it my property value has already gone up 40% to 50% because our area is exploding.

Funny thing is many of the same ham and eggers who are opposed to college loan forgiveness programs had and have no issue with the Tax Act of 2017 that cut corporate taxes by billions and that allowed corporations to buy back stock instead of the job creation that the POTUS promised.

My youngest had 1 year of loans (switched majors and 4 year at EL became 5.  He paid those loans off in 18 months.

My oldest has grad school loans and had to call or use snail mail (called and got through) because Naviant automatically put everyone into loan forgiveness thru August and told them they would continue to get their monthly check and apply it all to the principle.

To all those that side Biden wasn’t doing anything he sure is looking good and making a lot of sense.
