Rocinante wrote:I don’t think anyone would try to prove you wrong Turtleneck. But I do believe that there are a lot more reasonable Republicans than psychos. They just won’t stand up for the party because no matter what they have been propagandized to believe that the Democrats would be worse. Worse than a bunch of psychos that broke into the capital to try to overturn an election. Yeah they’re toast.
Totally approximating here, but I sort of imagine three groups among congressional Republicans right now.
The first group is from Crazytown. They are totally unfit to serve in Congress because they are poorly read, lazy, and intellectually challenged. Who they play in public is who they are in private. They believe the nonsense and conspiracies they spew. They spend a lot of time shouting about the Constitution, but combined have probably read no more than the first 100-200 words of the document. Examples might include Cawthorn, Taylor Greene, Gaetz, Boebert, and Senators Blackburn and Johnson.
The second group is from Panderville. They are not poorly read, lazy, or intellectually challenged, but they want to be reelected, maybe have larger political ambitions, and certainly want to protect the party's interests. So they do not distance themselves too far from Trumpism and perform all sorts of mental gymnastics to square themselves with Trump and the folks in Congress from Crazytown. In private they probably hate Trump and their colleagues from Crazytown. The more they obstruct the better for them and their party. They totally enable the folks from Crazytown, and they have been doing it for so long and are so willing, Crazytown and Panderville might as well merge into one city at this point. There is no longer much of a difference between the two. Examples might include McCarthy, or Senators Cruz, Graham, Rubio, and McConnell. They are no less pathetic and probably the biggest group.
The last group is from Conservative City. Their core conservative beliefs matter to them. In fact, they think Trumpism is bad for the party in the long run so they are willing to reject it now. Unfortunately, I think this is the smallest group, and when they speak publicly, they get punished by their colleagues. Here I am thinking Kinzinger and Cheney.
Here is the group that does not seem to exist: the group that wants to transform the party into something with broader appeal. There are no transformative voices in the GOP right now. Rather than doing the hardwork and suffering the short term losses of redirecting party toward something with broader appeal, they are closing ranks and trying to limit access to the ballot box as a means of remaining competitive.

It seems like Meijer tries to be in the latter and non-existent group. Problem is, his constituents are in crazytown. If the gets re-elected, it'll likely be because there are too many contenders vying for his seat.

It's almost like the GOP is morphing into the Dems. A lot of people to fit under an umbrella and still keep them all happy. They are better at figuring that shit out though. I guess being afraid of minorities is the great uniter.

Ok, let's, just for kicks, go with that list for a second and believe that there was merit. I love how they jump to the end without figuring out the how. They're literally the real life incarnation of the "something. something. ??????. Profit." meme.
Ok, so first, they don't say how he would get in the House of Representatives. The Dem won his district by 20 points.
But maybe the funniest part, is that they say Trump, as Speaker, will impeach and remove Biden and Harris. Gee, you'd think that after their guy was twice impeached, and twice not convicted, that they would be somewhat aware of that step in the Senate?
I know, I know, look at the nuts I'm talking about. It is just extra weird when they talk about legal/Constitutional means of doing something, while getting the legal/Constitutional aspect of it so horribly wrong.

Fox News, Newsmax, Onan have all moved away from reality. There’s a demand for it from their audience. It’s a vicious cycle.
When an insurrection at the capital is being labeled as “sight seeing” anything is possible.

The Constitution does not mandate the Speaker be an elected member of the House. I believe it has always been an elected member, but that is not required by the Constitution. You can be Speaker, Miami.

It would be quite a trick to elect Trump before midterms with a majority of Dems. But I guess these nuts think the black caucus is going to flip. They have lost touch with reality.

Helloooo sensible republicans, where are you?
I saw John Kasich on Real Time (I consider him sensible) and he was doing his usual greatest hit lines about how when he was in Washington he worked with Democrats to get stuff done. Bill pushed back and told him that world is gone and if he ran in his home state of Ohio he'd get his ass kicked now. That's where we are at.

Now, of course, it's a conservative (gerrymandered) district, but I am so disappointed in my hometown (more in the rural areas of the counties) for electing this guy.
They have some good (D) options in '22 and NC is redrawing districts, so...
Dude has, like, 3 Republicans primarying him. That's unheard of.

“Fact,” Omar wrote on Twitter on Thursday. “This buffoon looks down when she sees me at the Capitol, this whole story is made up. Sad she thinks bigotry gets her clout.
In response to those remarks, Omar called Boebert an “insurrectionist who sleeps with a pervert”, a reference to Boebert’s husband, who in 2004 pleaded guilty to public indecency and lewd exposure and spent time in jail.

Cawthorne's story about meeting his soon-to-be ex-wife is bizarre.
He says he traveled from Findland (or Sweden) to St. Petersburg Russia.
He says while in St. Petersburg he met an Army Captain (presumably the U.S. Army) in a casino.
He says he stayed in touch with the Army guy.
He says the Army guy invited him to CrossFit competition in Miami.
He says the CrossFit competition was fake.
He says the CrossFit competition was a set-up to get him to Miami and introduce him to a woman his mysterious Army friend thought he would like.
These people are so fucking weird and they can't tell the truth about anything. Why was an Army Captain in a Russian casino? Why was anybody gambling in a casino in St. Petersburg when St. Petersburg is not one of Russia's legal gambling zones? Why did somebody invite the guy in a wheelchair to a CrossFit competition? Do men play extensive matchmaker games like that, or are my friends and I just really bad people who don't care about one another? I don't think it was a Russian government operation and am not interested in any conspiracy theories, but these people fabricate every aspect of their life for absolutely no reason. They lie about everything all the time. It is so damn weird.
