Geographically, Where Does "Up North" Begin?

The State of Superior is where my folks are from.  Izzo is the king of the state of Superior and Mariucci is his assistant king.  Their #1 export is Meth, and the #1 import are dumb ass fucking fudgies who are grippin every time they cross the bridge.  Then they get out of their electric cars in their Polo shirts and start asking where the fudge is even before they eat a paste.  Isn't U.S. 10 below the equator?

Seriously though, I know that many people think "up north starts past U.S. 10 but look at the state. Past Midland you can still drive 7 1/2 to Houghton. That's 7 1/2 hours north, it's about 450 miles. Yet you can make Ohio from Midland in an 1 1/2 hours or about 160 miles. Technically, if we're only counting the lower peninsula U.S. 10 does just about divide the LP in half. 165 miles to Ohio from Midland, 167 miles to Cheboygan from Midland. But if we include the UP, well we have to reconsider the definition.

Houghton Lake is up north as far as I'm concerned. Up north ends at the Mackinaw Bridge, and then the UP starts. The UP is beyond up north. It's practically the North Pole fergodsakes.

I checked with the dry cleaners - the one who is responsible for my seer sucker suit and Brooks Brothers MSU sweatervest - and they pretty well said that Up North is a state of mind - one which my family christmas card fully supports.

I lived 'up north' but went to school in the south, growing up. Then for lunch I might go up north for a few minutes, just to return back south afterwards.

I had a friend in high school who's family had a place on Sanford Lake as their "up-north". It was like 30-45 min from their house. But when you were loaded on dad's stolen beers floating around in a pontoon... it really did feel like "up-north".
