The Michigan State University Police Department issued this alert Monday, shortly after 8pm:

MSUPD report a person displaying a gun from vehicle at Shaw/Farm in a road rage incident. Suspect left southbound on Farm in a blue or black Impala. Suspect is described as a black male. No other description was provided by the victim. Please call 517-355-2222 if you have any information on this incident.

The MSU Police Department then issued this update less than two hours later, at 9:47pm:

UPDATE: MSUPD has identified and taken into custody the subject displaying a firearm during the road rage incident at Shaw/Farm. The firearm was recovered.

Both the suspect and the victim, a 23-year-old man who attends Michigan State, were stopped at opposite sides of the light at Red Cedar and Shaw Lane. McGlothian-Taylor said the suspect's vehicle turned left in front of the victim's vehicle when the light changed to green and the victim honked his horn at the suspect.

McGlothian-Taylor said the suspect then turned around and drove by the victim again, flashing a handgun at the victim.

"The person didn't point the weapon at the victim, but displayed it within the vehicle," she said.

She declined to release more details about the incident and would not confirm that Williams is being investigated by Michigan State police officers.

This doesn't look good. He shouldn't have given up the gun though. Just flashing it through the window, best thing to do would have been to hide it and deny it, could have said he took out a phone or something else. Hard to tell what something flashy behind windows across the street is.

I had a gun on campus for much of my time at MSU.

It is legal to conceal carry on campus, just not classrooms.

If he was acting in self-defense, he can draw his firearm to protect himself. It is a myth in the antic-civil rights community that one has to shoot someone to act in self defense. There are millions of uses of firearms for self protection without firing a shot.

If not carrying legally, then again, up the creek on the weapons charge.

After hearing kings just kicked a pace truck I realized he had the stones to do what all of us had wanted to do at some point. I'm cool with kings coming back and will wait before I judge williams.

Road rage ... he shows his gun to prove he's the bigger badass ... he's in jail and suspended indefinitely. That doesn't sound like self-defense to me.

We don't know anything yet about the caller.

EAST LANSING -- Michigan State running back Delton Williams is facing a misdemeanor charge of brandishing a weapon in public, a gun for which he had a permit.

Online court records Tuesday from East Lansing's 54-B District court show Williams will be charged on one count of brandishing a weapon in public. The charges stem from an incident that took place about 7:30 p.m. Monday at Red Cedar Road and Shaw Lane on Michigan State's campus.

If convicted on the charge, Williams could face a maximum of 90 days in jail and a $100 fine.

According to the court records, Williams, 21 of Erie, Pennsylvania, had a permit for the weapon.
