As hard as it might be t admit, Ford’s recent decision on the new F150 All Electric Lightning production and battery plants to Kentucky and the assembly to TN makes sense.

Kentucky is giving huge energy breaks to Ford and their battery partner and Tennessee has the Federally subsidized TVA that’s giving Ford exceptionally low rates for electricity.

It’s also reality to build plants closer to customers and the projections are MI to be stuck @10M while states like GA, FL and NC grow. A lot cheaper to build near bigger markets.

Could MI have competed with the real estate availability, tax giveaways and low utility costs that are shifted to individual rate payers?

Maybe on the tax breaks, hard to find wide open spaces of 3600 acres in MI that are shovel ready and without the TVA MI isn’t in a position to shift costs to individual residential accounts so 6000 people can build trucks.

To give perspective to what 3600 acres means, one square mile is 640 acres, so this is just 5.625 square miles, which in a square is 2.4 miles on a side.

Tennessee generates a lot of nuclear energy. That's cheaper. Not sure how woke it is. No comment on GM?

Hi Dude - "Woke" in the context used means an awareness that we live in a society in which minorities have to be careful because they are not given equal protection by the police and are likely to be attacked by the same, along as being in other situations where they will not be looked at with unbiased eyes. This has nothing to do with renewable generation.

However, coal fired generation is more expensive than most other forms of generation. DTE, and utilities all over the country, are closing coal fired plants because they are not economically competitive with other forms of generation.

TVA, the source of electricity for the named sites for Ford & their battery supplier, is a US government owned utility (the classic definition of socialism) which has much less coal fired generation percentage.

DTE & CoPo in Michigan are asking for and receiving additional funding to clean up the sites of decommissioned coal plants, which is one of the reasons that rates have gone up in Michigan.

Ford has been producing and selling HEV's for about 20 years and BEV's for at least 5 years. (They had a Ranger BEV back in the early 2000's, but I don't think it was for sale.)

The F150 was switched from Steel to Aluminum body panels about 10 years ago for weight savings.
