Those stats are fairly meaningless. The Lions were 25th in the NFL in defensive yards per play. Just because the defense wasn't out there for as many plays as other teams does not mean that the D was middle of the pack. I'm sure you think the D-line is all world, so either the Lions are desperate for LB help (Shazier) or DB help (Dennard/Fuller/Clinton-Dix, etc.).
Also, just because the Lions were 4-2 through 6 games doesn't mean they were a good team. They beat the Vikings, Redskins, Bears, and Browns. Those teams went a combined 20-43-1.
Football Outsiders had the Lions at #19 offense, #14 defense last season in their final 2013 DVOA rankings. DVOA is "system that breaks down every single play and compares a team's performance to the league average based on situation in order to determine value over average."

DRAFT PROJECTION Round 7-Priority free agent according to NFL.com.
Adequate-sized, talented, inconsistent cornerback with moldable tools and scheme versatility, though he requires polish and patience.
Hopefully they can teach him something.
CBS had him as a 3-4th rounder, only one place had him as 7th.
Utah State CB Nevin Lawson with the No. 133 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
Lawson (5-foot-9 1/8, 190) made 40 starts for the Aggies, tallying 9.5 tackles for loss and six interceptions, including four as a senior en route to first-team All-Mountain West honors. He played both outside and slot corner, and garnered pre-draft comparisons to versatile Ravens Pro Bowler Lardarius Webb. An undersized but quick-twitch sleeper, Lawson ran 4.48 at the Combine with a 10-foot broad jump. He also offers extensive experience as a special teams gunner.

Let's see if the Lions pull the trigger on a QB here or if they try to wait one more round.

Traded to Dallas.
Traded back 12 spots, not sure what else they got yet.

It looks like a 7th.

Caraun Reid? I didn't see that coming. I guess he adds depth to the d-line.

I would rather have a veteran backup. A rookie's not going to get enough reps.

@RapSheet 3m
#Lions take an interesting sleeper: #Princeton DT Carun Reid. Veteran DL coach: “At the Senior Bowl, he was kicking everyone’s ass.”

Doesn't mean he's going to play this year. Someone they can draft, groom, and can take over for Stafford when he sucks again this year with all these weapons and the city of Detroit runs his ass outta town.

Caraun Reid
Reid is an excellent value at this point in the draft. He's a disruptive three-technique who has the quick hands and feet to make an early impact rushing the passer. He can get engulfed in the run game, but he played with better pad level last year than he did in 2012 and he's capable of making plays in the backfield.

What do you think they still need to take?
They did take one CB, but they have used picks on 4th-5th-6th round DB's the past few years, you can only take so many of those guys.
QB, WR are the needs on my list right now that they could use. Unless you want them to take a kicker.

I just don't think the Lions need to draft a backup rookie QB.
Some teams are looking for franchise QB's, some are looking to groom guys to take over. I don't think the Lions are in either of those categories right now. A rookie QB at this stage probably wouldn't be ready to be a backup. You still would need a veteran backup.
And you can still get players/depth with these picks.

Well the market is very very thin right now, and Dan Orlovsky is the current backup. Not sure if you can find the next Kurt Warner at a grocery store some where, but it makes sense to get someone.

Like who? 52 QB's started a game in the NFL last year and Orlovsky's record doesn't inspire. The Lions would have almost zero shot at winning any game that Stafford doesn't play right now. Call me crazy but I want them to take a shot in the dark with a developmental QB at some point in this draft. Hell if the guy shows anything in limited action, you can flip him for a nice return. I hate to say this but as MJ mentioned, Detroit's two most glaring holes are backup QB and kicker. Everything else would be adding depth at this point.

NFL.com with grades show
Max as the 5th best LB left right now.
Bennie as the 9th best WR left right now.
Lewis as the 6th best S left right now.
Denicos is way down the board.

You don't think any QBs will get released before the season starts?
And a rookie backup QB drafted this late will win you games?

I think any decent backup QB will be kept. I'd rather (and you have to realize as a Lions fan, there's a lot of symbolic hatred of Dan-O) try to hit a miracle in the draft with a QB than stand pat and know I'm completely screwed if Stafford gets hurt.

It's about rolling the dice and hoping you get lucky with one. TJ Yates won a playoff game for Houston a couple seasons ago. Brady was a 6th rounder look what he turned into. Not saying it happens every year, but its worth it. The Lions don't have any true holes other then Kicker.

He is a pain, although, I am starting to giggle every time he sings the praises of Michigan and Michigan players because the farther Michigan falls, the more he looks like a ridiculous jackass. "Michigan Man" uttered so proudly and arrogantly on the NFL Network is more laughable with every passing day.
**Edit: LOL he just went on another "Michigan Man" ramble.

The problem with drafting QBs is you're rolling the dice even drafting them in the 1st Round. If Stafford gets hurt, then they'll trade for Cousins or Mallett. Stanton could get released. Even Hoyer could get released. Just a wasted pick. Now if Mettenberger is still around in the 7th...

That's a good pick. Mettenberger to Tennessee.
Won't make up for their stupid pick of Lewan though.
Maybe they release Tyler Wilson who was drafted in the 4th round by Oakland the year before.

They got two good players at value who were both projected to go up to a few rounds higher. I'd say that's pretty good.

I like the Reid pick.
I am intrigued by Webster.
While I am glad that they took a CB, I would've preferred a guy that was either taller than 5'9" or faster than 4.5, but I don't really know anything other than that about Lawson so I am hoping to get educated on that pick.
