College Bloat Meets ‘The Blade’
Mr. Daniels kicks off our conversation with a morality tale: “I’ll speak to an audience of businesspeople and say: Here’s the racket that you should have gone into. You’re selling something, a college diploma, that’s deemed a necessity. And you have total pricing power.” Better than that: “When you raise your prices, you not only don’t lose customers, you may actually attract new ones.”
For lack of objective measures, “people associate the sticker price with quality: ‘If school A costs more than B, I guess it’s a better school.’ ” A third-party payer, the government, funds it all, so that “the customer—that is, the student and the family—feels insulated against the cost. A perfect formula for complacency.” The parallels with health care, he observes, are “smack on.”
His most eye-catching achievement has been to keep costs down for students. By graduation day in 2020, tuition won’t have risen in eight years. “We’re able to say,” he says, “that the total cost in nominal dollars of going to Purdue will be less in 2020 than it was in 2012.”
Mr. Daniels says widespread adoption of Purdue’s “affordability campaign” would improve higher education. “Everybody is worried,” he says, furrowing his brow. “What are we at? A trillion and a half of student debt, twice as much as the total credit-card debt. It’s a social and economic problem.” He offers up a list of life’s milestones that people delay because of college debt: “marriage, household formation, child raising, homeownership, business-start formation—all of these things are being pressed down by college debt.” The “obvious first step,” Mr. Daniels replies, “is don’t charge so darn much in the first place.”

LOL, I think MSU is going to "Block tuition" next year. that means you pay for like 15 credits whether you take 12 or 18. I'm not completely up on it yet. But I think it's rare that you'll make out on it. Not too many students will kill themselves with 18 or 20 credits. I have no idea how they'll do a summer section either. But, that the short conversation I had with the oldest on Saturday.

F'king BS to take 12 and pay for 15.
Why is it that as each week passes I begin to hate my school even more?

And I think MSU is banking on that. I’m not sure that it’s 100% that MSU uses it, but I have to believe that’s their theory. That if you put the number at 15 it’s rare students take more than that. But often students take less. Just another thing actuaries put together to make money.

I did 18 in the winter so I could do 12 or less in the spring.

My understanding is that each credit under 12 is charged on an individual basis. 12-18 are the same amount of $$. So instead of paying the flat rate for 12-18, I'd just take maximum 11 credits and pay the per-credit rate

I’m slow, help me out. If my kid takes 15 this year, and 15 next year under that system, will I be paying the same amount? (If credits stayed the same)

Re: General MSU thread
Yes, looks like students who take 12-18 credits will be charged the same amount. Student A taking 12 and Student B taking 18 credits would pay the same in tuition for example (the 15 credit rate). 11 or less pays by the credit hour.DWags wrote:Tim Wakefield wrote:

What I'm saying is that I'd take 11 or less and pay the per credit rate instead of being charged for 15 while only taking 12, 13, 14 credits. The advantage lies in taking 16, 17, or 18 credits and only having to pay for 15. But fuck that

Astronauts on Mars? MSU professor helps NASA plan to keep them healthy
A Michigan State University professor has received a two-year research grant to join other experts across the country, putting their collective brain power together on issues related to astronauts' health on long-term space missions.
George Mias, an assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at MSU, is one of 15 scientists nationwide to receive two years of research funding from the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) at the Baylor College of Medicine. The NASA-funded program started at the Texas school in 2016 "to predict, protect, and preserve astronaut physical and mental wellness during deep space exploration missions."

When I read the "Missing" article I had a very bad inkling that this would not end well. Very sad. I hope he was not drunk and scared he would get a DUI or something. Just stay in your car, at least you will not die. :(

Reading what Bob Thomas did, it makes me wonder what Cotter did to get removed.

Re: General MSU thread
my sources/friends (very credible btw) have strongly asserted that Cotter did absolutely nothing to be removed. The University decided to go another direction with admissions (a lot more analytics, etc) and didn't believe Cotter was the guy that could take them that way. Jim is much more of a gregarious, let's go out and meet folks where they are, hearty handshake kind of guy - not the "let's examine the minority ACT score analytics coming out of the north Chicago suburbs" guy..Wally Fairway wrote:Bob -Robert J Sakimano wrote: it was weird when Jim Cotter was removed (reassigned.. whatever) - dude absolutely bleeds green and white and had an illustrious career at MSU.

Buddy of mine from HS played w/a Jim Cotter in an old man league 30+ years ago. Pretty sure it’s the same one. Ask him to do his elephant impersonation. He used to have the dugout in stitches with that one.

I figured it was. It’s been a long, long time, but IIRC, Cotter had bum knees way back then. But that elephant impersonation, had to hurt his cheeks

You could probably sell me on national holiday for Halloween if it falls on M-F due to increased safety of parents not having to rush home from work.

I remember hearing about this. It was a few years before I was on campus. I always thought it was the same group that was responsible for the fire at Two Elk Lodge at Vail but I guess that was the Earth Liberation Front.

I was a freshman when this happened. It was pretty shocking, as you didn't really think of domestic terrorism much, especially at a place like MSU. This was, of course, before the Oklahoma City bombing, the first WTC bombing, etc.WhiteBoyHatcher wrote:I remember hearing about this. It was a few years before I was on campus. Yeah, the Animal Liberation Front took responsibility for the Anthony Hall firebomb & mink farm damage, but it was the Earth Liberation Front who claimed responsibility for torching Ag Hall (now Morrill) on New Year’s Eve 1999. Sidenote: For all the fear globally about the possibility of terrorism that night (because of Y2K-inspired acts and panic), the MSU Ag Hall fire was the only place in the world where there actually was a terrorist act conducted.

Thanks for the clarification GW. I don't think I realized there were 2 domestic terrorist type of fires on campus. The ELF is the one I remember, I would have been on campus at that time.
That Two Elk lodge fire was nuts. The lodge they built to replace it was also nuts.
