I don't think it's very fair that some runners get to start ahead of others. They should have to run the same distance. Especially Usain Bolt. Why does he get to start out in front of the other guys? Like he needs the advantage. Lol

it's the "every kid gets a trophy" phenomenon.. I mean, look at the guy in lane 8 and the head start he gets.. While not in total agreement, this comes pretty close to my feelings. I like the athletic competition, but that is only a small percent of total air time.

I find it funny that every sport has athletes decked out in the latest gear to shave fractions of a second of their final time...and yet sprinters still have a fucking bib safety clipped onto their front and back like they're running a charity 5k

alright, so I actually caught some of the track and field last night on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - luckily, the East Lansing cable system gets that so we're not beholden to NBC)...
anyway - the stadium looked about 1/3 full.. for finals.

it was pretty sweet.. I found out that it can be somewhat interesting to watch the Olympics for a few minutes without have to listen to the patronizing Americanized coverage.Herbie Green wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:alright, so I actually caught some of the track and field last night on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - luckily, the East Lansing cable system gets that so we're not beholden to NBC)...

You can utilize the volum button, I guess, when watching the NBC coverage. But your eyes are still treated to whatever silly "sport" they're showing at the time featuring a soft-focus feature on some person who overcame a tragic accident with a toaster to become the country's most decorated ping pong player.

Pfffftttt I've watched this shit on BBC, Frenchie Tele and NOS.
I miss the patronizing heartwarming coverage. Or I at least miss grapics that tell me WTF the score is and who the fuck is currently throwing the large object. I have yet to see a medal count on the tele... either they have no graphics budget in Europa or they hate that we are kicking the world's ass.

Last night I dreamed that I was a child
Out where the pines grow wild and tall
I was trying to make it home through the forest
Before the darkness falls
I heard the wind rustling through the trees
And ghostly voices rose from the fields
I ran with my heart pounding down that broken path
With the devil snappin' at my heels
I broke through the trees, and there in the night
My father's house stood shining hard and bright
The branches and brambles tore my clothes and scratched my arms
But I ran till I fell, shaking in his arms
I awoke and I imagined the hard things that pulled us apart
Will never again, sir, tear us from each other's hearts
I got dressed, and to that house I did ride
From out on the road, I could see its windows shining in light
I walked up the steps and stood on the porch
A woman I didn't recognize came and spoke to me through a chained door
I told her my story, and who I'd come for
She said "I'm sorry, son, but no one by that name lives here anymore"
My father's house shines hard and bright
It stands like a beacon calling me in the night
Calling and calling, so cold and alone
Shining 'cross this dark highway where our sins lie unatoned

n the summer that I was baptized
My father held me to his side
As they put me into the water
He said how on that day I cried
We were prisoners of love, a love in chains
He was standin' in the door, I was standin' in the rain
With the same hot blood burning in our veins
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
All of the old faces
Asked you why you're back
They fit you with position
And the keys to your daddy's Cadillac
In the darkness of your room
Your mother calls you by your true name
You remember the faces, the places, the names
You know it's never over, it's relentless as the rain
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)

Early in the morning factory whistle blows,
Man rises from bed and puts on his clothes,
Man takes his lunch, walks out in the morning light,
It's the working, the working, just the working life.
Through the mansions of fear, through the mansions of pain,
I see my daddy walking through them factory gates in the rain,
Factory takes his hearing, factory gives him life,
The working, the working, just the working life.
End of the day, factory whistle cries,
Men walk through these gates with death in their eyes.
And you just better believe, boy,
somebody's gonna get hurt tonight,
It's the working, the working, just the working life.

My suspicion is that they have some metrics for guys who love bubble gum ball factory stamped push them out lyrics because there are tragic stories of lost time between dad's and their suburban living sons, so the son can reflect on his tragic life. Oh, and spend all his wife's money on feeling better about himself.
But, like you, I"m just guessing.
