Where the phrase "Cup of Joe" might have originated....
A Cup o' Joe
A Cup o' Joe
Yet another such link to Daniels persists in Navy lore. The popular American slang for coffee—“a cup of Joe”—is held to be an apt and direct association to the abstemious gentleman who unwittingly had a hand in ushering in a new and even greater drinking obsession. Regardless of that story’s veracity, there can be no denying that while coffee had long been an integral aspect of life in commissioned ships, the banishment of alcohol made it an essential ritual. Coffee replaced the daily rum tot (or the mealtime wine) with numerous caffeine tots—all the day long.

TIL hippos sweat blood. Okay, it's not really blood, and it's sometimes red and sometimes more of a pinkish hue. It's also not sweat. Hippo blood sweat is really an oily secretion which acts as an antibiotic and antibacterial as well as a sunscreen and skin conditioner, because hippo skin is prone to cracking.

TIL: The Woman's Christian Temperance Union, those wacky activists who helped bring about Prohibition and work toward other social changes, was formed in late 1873/74 and remains active on an international scale to this very day.
"At its founding in 1874, the stated purpose of the WCTU was to create a "sober and pure world" by abstinence, purity, and evangelical Christianity. Annie Wittenmyer was its first president. The constitution of the WCTU called for "the entire prohibition of the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors as a beverage."

Re: tOfficial: "Today I Learned" (TIL) thread
fvcking mathematicians have too much time on their hands.
Did you know we just witnessed Pythagorean Theorem Day?
Pythagorean Theorem Day or Pythagoras Theorem Day is celebrated when the sum of the squares of the first two digits in a date equals the square of the last digit in the date.
Yesterday was a Pythagorean Theorem Day - August 15, 2017 (8/15/17 or 15/8/17): 8² + 15² = 17²
The day gets its name from Pythagoras' Theorem, which defines the relationship between the sides of a right triangle or a right-angled triangle – a triangle where one angle is at 90 degrees. According to the Theorem, in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (the longest side of the triangle) is equal to the sum of the square of the other two sides. The Theorem is named after Greek mathematician and philosopher, Pythagoras, who is thought to have formulated the proof for it.
The next Pythagorean Theorem Day will be
December 16, 2020 (12/16/20 or 16/12/20): 12² + 16² = 20²
July 24, 2025 (7/24/25 or 24/7/25): 7² + 24² = 25²

Re: tOfficial: "Today I Learned" (TIL) thread
Mayflies spend 99.9% of their life in a nymph stage eating stuff at the bottom of lakes and rivers. Then they pull themselves free of their nymphal shuck and rest to dry their newly exposed wings. They they fly away and hump and then die. Some cities need to use snow plows to remove the dead corpses.
Ironically, what is seen as a nuisance in America is seen as a gift in Africa. Locals around Lake Victoria gather adults of the mayfly Povilla adusta together with Chironomid midges to make a type of patty called ‘Kungu’. This protein rich food stuff is an important part of their diet.
