Re: Corporate Culture
That is not what you are saying, Steve. You have unveiled a hideous dark side and are clearly a master of evil.

Heat Miser wrote:Who says "Hey guys" in emails? Seems way too informal/unprofessional. Try "Good morning/afternoon all/everyone" for a group. If it's just two people, I go with "Good morning/afternoon Bob & Steve". Problem solved.
I've set up my email to automagically insert:
Good morning,
Thank you,
Heat Miser
305-up-yours (I would love to get this #)
Then I just change morning to afternoon if necessary & add the body. "Hey guys"? What kind of amateur operations do you people work for?
As for meetings/calls, a simple good morning/afternoon does the job. No possibility of offense. Simple stuff really.
if it goes out to a ton of people that I may or may not know, I'll leave pronouns out of it and I'll usually just start with "Good Morning".
As in:
Good Morning,
If anyone needs me, I'll be taking a nap.
if it's going to a more immediate group that I know quite well, that I see and work with every day, I'll often say:
Hello Friends,
If anyone needs me, I'll be taking a nap.
if it's my immediate colleagues that I have known and worked with for 20+ years, I'll just go with:
Howdy,
If y'all need me, I'll be taking a nap.
Ya gotta know your audience.

Re: Corporate Culture
I keep all my emails as formal as possible. Would never use "hey guys" or anything like that. The last thing I need is people thinking we can be friendly with each other.

I don't find that uncommon, at least in my field (advertising), depending on the relationship. Things are pretty casual/informal once you've been working with someone for a bit. I'm far more uncomfortable with the cheek kisses when greeting/leaving someone. While that's partly a Latin thing down here, I've found that's becoming more common elsewhere, too.
I also had an opposite experience with this porn king client of mine in New York several years ago (his porn was not the business of his that we were advertising). He was extremely formal, always calling everyone Mr (or Mrs/Ms/Miss) and their last name). Very old school NY businesssman in that sense. That made me uncomfortable, as well.

I believe this is the sort of thing the lib echo chamber blows up in social media (ala social dilemma) which then makes everything else they care about look less valid.
the dance floor at the 1985 Homecoming dance paid great homage to Sheila in accounting.
Flint, Michigan's own "Ready for the World"... Complete with the weird (british?) accent.

At the old building, our marketing chick sat in the cube next to me. Dividers were only 4' tall and were plexiglas. Way the cubes were arranged, my desk was facing hers. She stood up a lot minding various items on her desk that she'd ordered. Her butt was an 8-9. Her face was more like a 5 and pretty much no rack to speak of. She's proud of her butt, as she should be...even walks in a way to show it off. We talked often and she was/is cool.
One day our new CFO came over to talk with her right there at her cube and in front of a couple of us. She didn't like the sleeveless top marketing was wearing and told her to go home and change. The top was not revealing in any way and suitable for the summer months IMO. CFO said it was "distracting".
Since moving into the new building have noticed company women are covering their butts. Not sure what you call them...those extra long cardigan sweaters? Extra long shirttails on casual Friday?
Haven't asked any women at work, because that would be inappropriate, but thinking the CFO put down her personal mandate on acceptable female attire.

That's kind of weird. The new era out here is everyone wears blue jeans, and t shirts to work or pretty much whatever. I see ball caps and sports gear at the office. It's a much different world than when I started out and it was strict business professional.
