Interesting to see this thread pop up now. There was a story in the Journal a couple of days ago about Jackson National Life contracting with an India-based IT company. There was a prepared release for interested news orgs, and it was filled with corporate speak that would drive me nuts if I had to put up with it on a regular basis. It’s just a horribly worded release. Please do enjoy:

“Jackson and its sister company, Prudential Corporation Asia (PCA), have signed a global services agreement with Tech Mahindra, a leading technology services company. Under the agreement, Tech Mahindra will provide technology support and services to Jackson, as well as Prudential plc’s life and asset management businesses across Asia.

As a leading provider of retirement products in the U.S., Jackson continually evaluates and improves its business processes to meet fast-changing customer needs. By entrusting our day-to-day IT operations to Tech Mahindra, we can leverage their client-centric solutions to improve productivity and scalability.

Technology is a key enabler of our business. We will continue to leverage our extensive in-house technology resources so that we can better serve our customers and enhance their experience with us.”

There’s more, but you get the idea.

Dude, when I used to work in midtown when I'd get out of the office for lunch I'd hear people at the tables adjacent to me talking in language like that. I seriously had no clue what the fuck they were talking about.

that's really the only way to break down the silos. By working across all verticals.

to piggyback on that, make sure you take care of the low-hanging fruit. Going forward, it's best just to drill down in order to get the ball rolling. Make sure everyone is on the same page, and if you feel like someone isn't being customer-centric, feel free to touch base with them and develop an action plan.

The other one is the passive aggressive shit when a mistake happens.

Just wondering how come this was missed? or lets all jump on a call to discuss.

Or if there is ever anything we can do don't be afraid to reach out to the team for help. We'll take something off your plate if it's too much.

It's all BS whenever I'm slammed I'll reach out for someone to pick up one of my projects and people do all this deflection or corporate tennis (aka 'hit the ball back over to your side of the net) so that they don't take on anything additional.

I get that some folks do what they have to.. and then some folks enjoy the corporate culture, some like the challenge, the hierarchy - the structure of companies. The golf outings, the after hours at the bars, etc.

I'm thankful for my gloriously boring life. My boring life fits me like a glove. I suspect it would drive some people insane. It's all about "fit".

I've been in the game for a while those things don't exist. When I started in the early 00's there used to be company sponsored happy hours but they slashed the budgets and stopped that shit. I did get US Open tickets for a while and Yankees tickets for a while which I was grateful for.

I’ve always thought it’s both, but I do believe we gravitate not only toward our conscious interests, but subconsciously toward that which better/best fits the makeup of our dna. For example, someone who has a hard time sitting still and focusing on a single task might be unhappy with a desk job, so s/he chooses something which allows them to stay on their feet, move around, multitask, etc.

It’s a little out there, but I also think we subconsciously gravitate toward the topography with which our dna is most familiar and comfortable. I live in the southern half of lower michigan, but there’s no way I’m a flatlander at heart.

Ironically, that clip is from the last season. But I agree, the first 3 seasons are awesome, starts to get a bit hit or miss after that. Still, some of my favorite episodes are from later seasons.

I have customers who, like bob have been with the same utility, state agency, county, city or university for 20+ years or more and like it. Same for some who have been with the same architectural or design/build contractor and are happy.

The only times I have spent more than a day in a month or quarter with a boss was training when hired. I have always been a road warrior. Away from home 2-6 days a month and usually .5 days a week at home doing reports, etc. have been able attend every school conference, every holiday program and missed less than 10 athletic events (2 kids, 8 years apart so one left for college and started the cycle again.

My biggest bitch the internet. As a Manufacturers Rep we have a over 2 dozen lines and we have to negotiate the number of video conferences. The manufacturers love them because they are a helluva lot cheaper than them coming to our main office or a regional meeting off site.

I admire you guys who work from home and don’t go bat crazy.

What is wrong with corporate culture? People like Steve.

"Oh, hey, great new idea. Let's do X, Y, and Z. It will be awesome. I'll lead the effort and have it on your desk next week."

...the next week...

"Oh, hey, yeah, I just thought it would be better if somebody else did the work. It was my idea, but I didn't want to do the work. I just want the credit, but don't want to put too much effort into it. Does that make sense? Great. Well, got to go, Valenti's show is starting soon."

We have an anti racist task force now (all of our board of directors are white guys btw) and in the coming months we are going to have pro-noun sensitivity training and we are going to have our preferred pronouns added to our email signature. Mine is just going to be 'Hey Dude'.

Steve, what you described is exactly my company too.

And those that work at headquarters now have the open areas too. Which i don't understand as they're talking to patients/health care centers/insurances all the time. I don't get how they can hear clearly. And they all hate it.

I’ve been trying pretty actively to stop saying “hey guys” in emails and meetings and such. I can be better than that and there are plenty of words to use. Not that anyone is offended or cares or would notice either way. But I can be better.

I know someone that is non-binary now and it's VERY difficult for me. I can't ask 'would she like me to pick up a coffee' I have to say 'would they like me to pick up a coffee'. I'm all for doing this but I think there needs to be an understanding for slip ups as well.
