I have been thinking about this a lot, as I'm sure many people have been. A lot of the solutions are fairly obvious, mostly involving oversight, accountability, and demilitarization.

One out of the box idea I've had is one I like to call the honeybee principle (it needs a better name). The idea is that any police officer who discharges his or her service weapon, no matter how justified, is no longer eligible for active duty. Desk work/administrative only after that. This would incentivize de-escalation and non-lethal methods, at least theoretically.

Anyone who gets in a shootout and/or kills someone is likely to be a little fucked up by the experience, psychologically speaking. Anyone who isn't a little fucked up by shooting someone definitely shouldn't be a cop anyway. I think the idea is solid, but it is definitely a #highthought. I'm very open to discussion.

When I saw that story on Tuesday I couldn't believe it. Not one of those cops compared the state issuing the plate? Or that it was a motorcycle plate, which last I checked is about 1/4 the size of an automobile plate? But then they had to flex cuff this family and force them to lie down? Out of control.
