Unless Smith told Leavitt he doesn't have a future at MSU, or Leavitt feels he won't get a fair shot, it's a great chance to prove a doubter wrong by outworking and outperforming the competition. Also, maybe it's a matter of clashing styles, which doesn't say much about Smith's assessment of Leavitt other than he felt the skillset was a bad match. That's not a slight. You don't just offer every QB within two hours of your campus for the sake of an offer. That's not how these things work. Oh well. Good luck to Leavitt and I hope he tears it up wherever he lands.

I didn't play QB in high school (Tuscola HS, '88), as I took my talents (and my 5.1 40 yard time) to the receiving corps where I dazzled Coach Breece with not only an elephant-like quickness but the soft hands of a weathered bricklayer.

I did hold for extra points and field goals, so I can bring that to the table, as well.

For a grad transfer or other player with one year left it might just be all about cashing in, especially if the NFL stock is "iffy".

The sole purpose for joining the Army was to buy a truck, that just happened to be for sale... as if he didn't realize it would just sit at his mom's house rusting for the vast majority of the 4 years. Seems like committing 4 years of your life to purchase a depreciatable asset you wouldn't even get to use during those 4 years is pretty silly.

He got away from Tugger.  
Thorne’s father was part of WMU’s coaching staff.  The FBS coaching club is a small community.  It isn’t a reach that Thorne’s father had learned Tugger was trying to replace him with another transfer  QB.

Tugger’s world was crashing around him.  His staff couldn’t recruit.  NIL made transfer market much more competitive  and refined so immeadiate impact players like KW3 weren’t slipping through and his Tugger’s personal life was in a downward spiral.  
Thorne had an advantage of another set of eyes and ears to confirm things he had heard or suspected.

In the end Thorne was QB for a 4-8 SEC team instead of an MSU team that finished 4-8.  But he didn’t have to be coached by Tugger.
