Pretty impressive for a 100% albino buck to make it that long, especially in Michigan. I think I would have way more fun letting him walk and just keeping an eye out for him in the future and hopefully some offspring...
That said, I just got my deer back from the processor tonight. Having some jalapeno/chedder summer sausage right now. Delish...

So, can anyone use a crossbow now a days? Didn't you need a legit excuse back in the day?

Frequently Asked Questions About Crossbow Hunting
Do I need a crossbow stamp?
No. Under the new regulations, a crossbow stamp is no longer required.
Who can hunt with a crossbow?
Anyone who is 10 years old or older can hunt with a crossbow during any season when a firearm is allowed, for big game or small game, except that hunters in the Upper Peninsula may not use a crossbow during the Dec. 1-Jan. 1 late archery season and Dec. 2-11 muzzleloader season, unless the hunter is disabled.
Anyone who is 10 years old or older may use a crossbow throughout the archery deer season in the Lower Peninsula (Oct. 1-Nov. 14 and Dec. 1-Jan. 1) and during the early archery deer season in the Upper Peninsula (Oct. 1-Nov. 14). Crossbow use is not allowed in the Red Oak Unit during the archery-only bear season (Oct. 7-13).
Youth who are 9 years old and younger can hunt with a crossbow as long as they are licensed through the Mentored Youth Hunting (MYH) Program. Please see www.michigan.gov/mentoredhunting for complete MYH Program rules.
The DNR may issue a crossbow permit or a special permit to take game with a modified bow to a person with a valid hunting license to take a deer during an open deer season, if the person is certified as having permanent or temporary disability, as defined in Wildlife Conservation Order 5.95, which renders a person unable to use conventional archery equipment. Hunters may use a modified bow where crossbows are legal. A modified bow is a bow, other than a crossbow, that has been physically altered so that it may be held, aimed and shot with one arm.
Why can't I use a crossbow in the Upper Peninsula during the late archery deer season?
The Natural Resources Commission thought that the large migration of deer gathering in wintering yards might be subject to over-harvest if crossbows are widely adopted by hunters.
Can 10- and 11-year-olds use crossbows?
Yes, as of the 2010 hunting seasons.
Are there any restrictions on the velocity at which crossbows can shoot bolts?
No, a previous restriction on the velocity has been removed as of the 2010 hunting seasons. Although, when hunting deer, bear, elk and turkey, crossbow hunters must use only arrows, bolts, and quarrels with a broadhead hunting type of point not less than 7/8 of an inch wide with a minimum of 14 inches in length.
Do I need to wear hunter orange when using a crossbow?
Crossbow hunters are required to wear hunter orange while hunting deer during the early antlerless, youth firearm and November firearm deer seasons. In addition, crossbow hunters pursuing small game must wear hunter orange. The law does not apply to archery or crossbow deer hunters during the archery deer season, or to those hunting waterfowl, crow and wild turkey. It does not apply to archery or crossbow bear hunters or to those who are stationary and in the act of hunting bobcat, coyote or fox.
Are these regulations valid on a temporary basis?
No. The Natural Resources Commission initially passed expanded crossbow regulations on a trial basis. As opportunities to hunt with a crossbow were further expanded heading into the 2010 hunting seasons, the sunset provision for crossbow regulations was removed.

like you had it bookmarked or something.
I have a screwy shoulder and could never pull back more then 30lbs without it poping out. (doesn't bother me with anything else) Never made the leap into the crossbow though.

Re: Swill Deer Hunting Thread.
Crossbows are almost unfair compared to garden variety compounds bows in my opinion. But, if they are legal, why the hell not use them? I don't use cane poles when I go salmon fishing because it makes it more fair to the intended quarry...
You should go shoot one at your local range. You will end up buying one if you like to bow hunt.

My knees dislocate if I look at them wrong. Already had the reconstruction on the left one. Still does it. Whatever, I'm not hooping at my advanced age anyway. I have to wear a brace when I golf. But I swing hard as fuck.

Surgery is for pussies. Real men just deal with the pain.
Truthfully, It doesn't bother me in normal situations. When do you ever hold like you do with a bow in day to day activities? It hasn't popped in probably 5 years.

Probably the surgery I will have to have at some point. The old man had both done and one of mine locks occasionally.

If by "wear a brace", you actually mean "drink 3 big gulps worth of captain and coke per 9", then ok. Otherwise, what ****ing brace are you talking about?

No. I dislocated it at golf league in mid/late August. Purchased a special brace that is supposed to keep it from doing that. Never not wearing it again because that is a very cringe-worthy sound and feeling. And quite painful I might add.

10/23: only got to sit for an hour and a half. Nothin...... Very frustrating. I've seen exactly ONE deer, and she is in my freezer right now. It is still nice to get out there and chillaxe for a couple hours, but for fucks sake, I know there are tons of them hitting my bait, dammit all....

Getting back out this weekend. Only time I won't hunt is Saturday night (cause I'll be at SS!)
tTy, I've seen a ton of deer, but no shots fired. Passed a big doe cause she had a little one with her two weeks ago. Sunday will be the one year anniversary of me dropping my monster 9 pt last year.

Our scale is old and rusty and said 210 lbs. For our area that is a bruiser. Of course a week later I had one walk by me even bigger but couldn't get a shot off. And he never even flinched at my grunt calls nor snort-wheezes.

Evidently this poor kid is getting crucified nationally now. While I still say that I would not have run an arrow through this one, I don't begrudge him for a minute for taking this deer.

Went up on the mountain last weekend as a scout and a flusher for my buddy. I worked the high timber and pushed a small heard of elk down to him. He got his boy. Hauling that beast out was a bitch, but it will be worth it when he gives me my cut... so to speak.

It was really fun this year because our radios actually worked (two years ago when I did it for him last they pooped out on us), and the weather cooperated. The elk moved down further than I wanted them to though. I was trying to get them to move toward this meadow that was closer to the road we drove in on but they moved way down in this little saddle below us. I thought they might be going that way radioed to him that he had to move down. Glad I did, because it worked out. I'd have gotten an earful if it hadn't. He actually set up at the edge of the timber and they moved past him and into the opening where he had a great view from above. He probably watched them for only about 10 min. before he got the shot. It was pretty sweet.
Also, there were black bear tracks all over up there, but we never saw one. Good times.

I live in the shadow of the Bighorn Mountains in Sheridan Wyoming.
I checked out that thread... pretty cool and not all that different from a lot of what folks do around here. I generally go up for at most an overnighter because I live so close. The hunt I described was actually a wake up in the dark kind of day (I also just realized it was also Wednesday, not the weekend - derp). We got on site at about 4AM and hiked in. My buddy got his elk around 7:30 and it took us most of the rest of the day to haul it out. Like I said, there's a road that runs up the ridge in the area that my buddy drew for and then it's basically just down, down, down into the timber for the elk. We generally go up for a night a week or so before season opens to scout around. That way we know about where we're going to go. He sometimes spends more time up there, but I haven't applied for an elk tag yet. Just been a helper.
It would be cool to set up a canvas tent with a wood burner inside though and do a few days worth of hunting with a group. Never done that. I mean, I've done deer camp in MI back when I was younger, but that was essentially staying at my grandparents backwoods trailer in Cadillac and tagging along with my dad.
