Spicy tuna. California is popular if you like avocado. Rainbow is good. Never really tried beauty and the beast because I'm not a fan if eel.

Work yourself in slowly, and you'll soon learn it's among the greatest foods on the planet, sometimes the greatest. Just order a lot of different things and figure out what you like. Many places have a boat or mixed deal that is good value.

A spicy tuna roll was mentioned above - it's simple, usually not very spicy - pair it with a regular tuna roll. I like to have about 1/4 to 1/3 of my rolls spicy. Skip the California roll and look for an eel avocado roll - sounds scary but wonderful. Can be built up into a dragon roll, then with shrimp tempura etc., it starts awesome and gets better and better. You can cheaply try out all sorts of rolls from there, yellowtail, salmon, crab, etc. etc.

All you need to do is order a bunch of strange shit once and figure out what you like. It doesn't have to be expensive either, most restaurants have good lunch deals, and they're usually the cheapest places to drink in town. My local place has an awesome lunch special that's almost cheaper than eat at McDonalds.

For those squeamish about eating raw fish I suggest starting with a ceviche or gravlox. Both are cured and delicious. Ceviche is a quick cure. Gravlox takes a couple days in the fridge

I have no idea what the name of the roll was when I was in Manilla, but it was awesome. Sorry that's not much help, but in Asia the rolls are different than in the US.

I once had sort of the same experience after splitting a pint of schnapps and a fifth of Bacardi 151 with a friend. Never had much of taste for either since.

If any of you are ever in Austin and love sushi go to Uchi or Uchiko and dont order, just tell the waitress to bring the chef recommendations. You will get things you would normally never order and they are amazing. Uchi is pretty well known as one of the best sushi restaurants in the country.
