What an amazing game. So many finals that go to pens seem like they're 0-0 or 1--1. This was actually kind of dull for the first 79 minutes, but after that, wow. 2 late goals to tie, then each with a goal in the second extra time. Messi and Mbappe going back and forth for the Golden Boot during the game.

As discussed, I fucking hate Argentina, but am happy for Lisandro Martinez (he doesn't play and 3 goals are scored on them), and a couple Argentines I know.

And this probably adds about 20% to what I'll be able to sell my ticket for for Messi's first game at Inter Miami this summer, if that goes through. The Messi fanboys will be rabid for that game.

We can have this discussion about penalty kicks.  While it seems to take the game out of the worlds greatest athletes hands and puts it in the hands of a goalie basically guessing.  However, you cant deny how dramatic that is.  I’m guessing over a billion people stopped what they were doing and watched.

I know this makes me sound like an old fuddy duddy (which I am), but that was classless by the keeper doing that. And yet completely not unexpected.

The stupid robe that they made Messi wear was disgusting. It's peak sportswashing. It will be one of the most famous sports photos in the world for a long time, and they make him wear that. Of course, that guy that gave it to Messi pays him about a million dollars a week currently, so he wasn't going to refuse even if he could.

No one likes them, but they're necessary in the modern age.  And yes, the drama is insane. I can't imagine.

Shootouts were only introduced in 1970.  I don't know off hand if it ever came to this in the World Cup, but as recently as the 1960s, a semifinal of the European Championship was determined by a coin flip.  Can you imagine.

In the English FA Cup, they still do replays if there is a draw in the early to mid rounds.  Up until 1999, they did that in the semifinals, as well.  It being a headache for TV coverage is basically why the idea of a replay has gone away.

First overtime:  15 minutes with goals 1 meter wider.  
Successive 15 minute overtimes each with additional meter to defend.

A guy almost died on the field at the euros last summer. Technically he did I guess. His heart stopped. I don’t know if your “fuck em let god sort them out” plan will get too much traction

Every single proposal here is also fundamentally changing the game. It seems there is broad acknowledgement that you can’t just keep going forever… but dropping players from the field, adding subs, letting guys who left the field come back, this all fundamentally changes the game too.

Penalties suck. But I don’t think there is a not sucky option out there.

Hockey and basketball and football overtimes are all exhausting too.  But as Damien Harris said on the Justin Spiro show about how our athletes after the tunnel incident found out that "Many of us look at them as entertainment and not as people", do we really care about safety?  If so, that's great, but put me down in the skeptical category.  

I have no problem with the drama of the shoot out.  However, you can say that all it really comes down to is the goalie either guessing right our wrong the best out of 5  with the opposing goalie.  Sure, there is skill involved after guessing.  but look at the winning goal picture of the World cup.  

Note, I couldn't find the actual winning goal I saw on T.V. but it was the same as the following, opposite side.  Just not guessing right.

To be sure, the penalty kick finish will never be changed in soccer. We all know that. It's the American non familiarization with the sport that creates our need and our arrogance to change a sport that is doing fine world wide for decades. My beef with it is that the goalies are just guessing. like the above picture. But that has been happening before I was born so, I get it.

To be sure, the penalty kick finish will never be changed in soccer. We all know that. It's the American non familiarization with the sport that creates our need and our arrogance to change a sport that is doing fine world wide for decades. My beef with it is that the goalies are just guessing. like the above picture. But that has been happening before I was born so, I get it.

They aren't really guessing though. They try to read the player and how he's positioning his body, and the player is trying to make the keeper think he's going one way and/or start leaning one way. This game of chicken is happening in about a second or less as the player plants his foot and starts his kicking motion. If the keeper doesn't get a read on him, I suppose he guesses. And if not, it sometimes looks like he guesses. And some keepers are much better than reading this than others. France's keeper was awful at it. Argentina's keeper is a master of it (I don't think he went the wrong way once in either of their two shootouts).

While it's not a coin flip or guessing game, it is still something that is not indicative of the flow of the game, and that sucks. No one argues that it is part of the beauty of soccer.
