In the afternoon game, Ronaldo gets benched, and the team plays amazing with his replacement scoring a hat trick and an assist.

I'd say that I was shocked if I hadn't just seen for the last 18 months how he can make his team's offense worse. He demands that the offense runs through him and he isn't what he once was for that to work.

For the relatively uninitiated- I don’t really buy the diving stuff that everyone talks about. People underestimate how much getting kicked in the back of the calf with a spike hurts, albeit momentarily, and they definitely underestimate that when it comes to factoring into that how much these dudes have run over the course of the game (USMNT’s players, not including the goalie, averaged 7.5 miles each per game). They also also underestimate that in this sport you can’t hobble off to the sideline, take the two minutes you need, and only miss one play in that time like in football. The only way to get that time is to stay on the ground for a second.

But Naymar…. Naymar dives. A lot. Feel free to pile on Naymar for diving.

Yeah, and now Messi is out there whining about the ref. Really, dude? He didn't give Messi a yellow for the very intentional handball, which is always 100% a yellow. That means his yellow before the free kick equalizer would have seen him sent off. And his team mate should have had a double yellow for the late tackled followed by kicking the ball into the Dutch bench.

He's whining about the ref adding 10 minutes of injury time when they've been doing that the whole tournament. Yet Argentina should have been down to 9 men in injury time.

To be fair...

The ref was awful. He lost control of that game early on. I thought the PK was suspect, but the letter of the law it prob is. But then the Dutch didn't get a call 10mins later in the box. The Messi hand ball. I could go on.

I'm not gonna blame the loss on the refs. But it certainly won't ever be used as a model of officiating.

Holy shit, twitterverse is saying that Grant Wahl has died in Qatar.

He was outspoken about Qatar's anti-gay policies and was harassed for wearing a shirt with a rainbow on it.

Qatar and FIFA will do everything in their power to ensure that this is a random heart attack or something. And maybe, hopefully, it is. Qatar wouldn't be stupid enough to do this, but some random or "unofficial" person might be. Wild stuff.
