I'm nearsighted (that's where you can't see well at distances, right?). With my contacts I've always been able to read close up. But lately it's been getting a little harder. Might have to get bifocal contacts or use readers for that before too long.

Whenever an Olympic athlete from Austria competes, their country’s designation is AUT. That’s because Australia got the designation AUS. That doesn’t seem fair, because AUT doesn’t make any sense. Australia has had it easy for too long, and it’s time for it to take the awkward AUT.
That’s right; I propose the two countries switch it up. It’s the right thing to do.

Well Austria in German is Österreich. So maybe the designation should be ÖST?
Many German speakers have a hard time with the whole Austria Australia thing. When they try to pronounce the two with their accent they sound very similar.
Edited to add:
I was wondering why I opened the Olympic thread. But since this is random ramblings may I add, i like the name for Germany in Spanish, Aleman. And then of course it is Deutschland. One land and so many different names.

I always have thought it weird that we call so many countries by different names than the people living there. Deutschland is too hard to say, but Kazakhstan is fine? I can discern no rhyme or reason.

Germany is kind of an unusual case, where the name is so different in different languages (the English name of Germany coming from the Romans calling the tribes Germanic; the Spanish name for it, Alemania, coming from an area that was called something similar, etc.). I believe most was still part of the Holy Roman Empire until the early 1800s, so there wasn't a real national identity under that name like there was for France and Spain, for example. At least that's my theory, without adding a lot of nuance to it.
But we at least call most other countries by pretty similar names, even if there are some spelling/pronunciation differences.

God I love raw oysters. I could eat dozens of them if I could afford it.

I could eat sushi every day. I didn't care for kibbee. I've never had carpaccio. I've even had buffalo tartare (steak is better). I get the texture being difficult to deal with in oysters. It does involve getting past that. It's just amazing how different they taste from not just a different ocean, but a different bay.
It's also probably hard for some to mentally prepare eating them when they are alive when you eat them.
And no Greenway, I've never had them out of a can. I prefer them raw, even over fried in butter.

Re: Random Ramblings
I made this seafood chowder today. It was great. Soooooo filling. I had bought one NY strip and salad ingredients for us to split. But as I was looking at the ingredients my wife and I decided it was enough for dinner.
Try it. I used frozen raw shrimp instead of canned and I used lump crab meat instead of imitation. Carrots, to my liking, made it a bit sweet. I’m going to use less next time. Also might add a dash of salt. But the potato’s and cream of… made it beyond filling.
Love slow cooker on a day like this.
gredients
1 can (10 ounce size) cream of potato soup
1 can (10 ounce size) cream of mushroom soup
2 1/2 cups milk
4 medium carrots, finely chopped
2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 stalks celery, finely chopped
7 ounces canned chopped clams, drained
6 ounces canned shrimp, drained
4 ounces imitation crab, flaked
5 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
directions
Combine the cream of potato soup, cream of mushroom soup, and milk until smooth. Pour into crock pot.
Stir in the carrots, potatoes, onion, and celery.
Cover the crock pot and cook on low for 4-5 hours.
Stir in the clams, shrimp, and crab. Cover and cook on low for 30 more minutes or until the seafood is heated through.

That sounds amazing and simple. I'm going to try this.
And I didn't know there was such a thing as canned shrimp, sounds gross.

I could tell by the amounts it's more of a 2 person (with some leftover meal). I would definitely double it, and have leftovers for another day.
That's how I cook. Whatever I make is going to be enough for 2 dinners. I don't have time to cook every day.

DWags, you didn’t specify what type of potato to use. Should I get
RUSSET?
RED?
YELLOW?
WHITE?
PURPLE?
FINGERLING?
PETITE?
This is a critical piece of information, DWags. How am I supposed to pitch woo at Mrs. GreenWay with an incomplete recipe? It’s obvious the answer is… I can’t.

Re: Random Ramblings
I put myself in 6 months of cat-like hibernation during the fall and winter months. But it’s the end of February.
Time to go hunting. The sun is rising. The sun is appearing more and more with each day that passes.
I hibernate so I reserve energy so I can harvest wheat in the spring and summer
Time to download dating apps and find myself a
wife
I’ve cultivated my resources and energy for the last 5 months. Time to plan an active spring and summer. Tiger games, bowling, let’s do it.

Re: Random Ramblings
After a good hibernation I like to break my fast with a hardy breakfast.
When I make my Omelettes, I will add milk to the eggs. They are a bit fluffier. I put some diced onions and peppers with some ham in my omelette pan and fry them up until the onions are a bit translucent. Add the egg mixture. Also, I’ve become fairly adept at the flip. I like to use Monterey Jack in mine before I fold it.
Sometimes we’ll add a breakfast meat. But many times the omelette is way more than enough.

Order omelets at restaurants. At home I prefer to make frittata...or scrambled eggs. Very rarely do you get proper scrambled eggs at a restaurant. At home I can make them with the perfect wetness. Sometimes throw in fresh spinach near the end.

Humans are not cats. But out of the millions of invisible “parasites” one parasite ended up staying for thousands of years in humans. Why? Because it helped us sleep, increase body temperature, be less social, and go through occasional bouts of depression during the fall and winter months when there was less access to sunlight, specifically in European or populations with temperate climates. There was an advantage to developing this feature.
